It could be important to include the make and model of equipment you are asking about, but if you don't know, neither do we.

If you're in a bind and need access to the vehicle, there should be an access hole along side of the shifter where you can put a thin screwdriver or some other stiff thin object in, to press on a small lever under the console to release the shifter. Do not press hard but just firmly enough to release the catch. This is actually the switch that the brake light switch goes through to trigger the release of the safety catch. As far as removing the console, look for a video on you tube for your particular vehicle.

SOURCE: shift light replacement

First, the bulb is a GE 158.
There are two screws near the back of the parking brake cover (one each side). Move the seats forward to remove them.
After removing the parking brake cover (helps to raise the parking brake), there are two screws at the back of the shift console.
Remove those two screws. Pull out the four 'serrated' push pins under the dash area holding the shift console (two each side). Then pull the cup holder up and out.
You should then be able to remove the shift console. One suggestion- if you need to move the shifter out of park, make sure your parking brake is on! There is a shift release you can depress with a small screwdriver under the little button/tab to the right of the shifter. (Can also be reached under the console with your finger after removing the cupholder.)
The bulb holder is on the driver's side. Only one I assume.
Good Luck,
Robert

SOURCE: Nissan Sentra shifter lamp replacement

Transmission shift indicator light on center console.
First
make sure the fuse is good.
If the fuse is good then remove the screws holding the center console cover. You will need a long and short phillip screwdriver. Look for screws in the cup holder, under the handbrake handle and where the console runs under the dash. You may have to move seats forward/backward to reach the screws. When you attempt to raise the console cover you will notice you overlook a screws. Remove them also. You may be able to reach the bulb without removing the gear shift handle. DO NOT TOUCH any other electronics you see. The AIRBAG ACTUATOR is located here also. Replace bulb. Test before reassembly. Good Saturday morning project.

SOURCE: How do you take off the center console for a 2004 f 150

My mother had the same problem in her 2004 SC Lariat. All you have to do is pop up that center console where the gear shifter is (it's connected by pop in fastners) and push that white default button on the side of the gear shift. After you get tired of doing this for a bout a week, the dealer will try and charge about 6-$700 bucks for this piece. Luckly we got it replaced for nothing...Thank God!!!

I forgot what the dealer said why was it malfunctioning; you might want to try and see if there is a recall on it first before you go and shell out some money. Hope this helps.

I'm actually surfing through yahoo to fix another problem I'm going through...the flashing climate control unit. Yeah, her's went out and I'm trying to fix it instead of going to the dealer.

SOURCE: Removal of door panel/trim

You'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. If needed, you can pull back the weather seal (can't reuse it, but it's not that important) and you will be able to access everything inside the door

It wont go into reverse

This is a relatively common problem on these new Chryslre 300s.The failure is in the shifter assembly itself and it will need to be replaced. But for now, to limp around, you can actually still shift the car, you just cannot use the shifter. You will need to remove the center console and find where the shift linkage attaches to the shifter assembly. Remove the linkage and you can manually shift until you replace the shifter assembly. Here is how to remove the center console:

techmecho_5.gif

Apply the parking brake.Turn the ignition switch to the On position, apply the service brakes and place the gear selector lever into the Neutral position.Turn the ignition switch to the Off position and release the service brakes.Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.Remove the mat (2) from the cubby bin at the front of the floor console.Open the lid of the console rear bin and remove the mat (3) from the rear bin.Remove the two screws (1) that secure the front of the console shifter bezel to the console.Using a trim stick unsnap the console bezel from the console.Remove the shifter bezel from around the gear selector lever.

techmecho_6.gifRemove the three 8 mm bolts (2) from the rear bin that secure the console to the floor panel transmission tunnel.Remove the two screws (3) that secure the front of the console to the instrument panel.Slide the console rearward far enough to access and disconnect the jumper wire connector (4) from the accessory power outlet on the underside of the console.Remove the floor console from the vehicle.-------------- Thankyou.
