What do the 4 prongs in an ignition coil represent?

01 chevy silverado, 5.3. I want to test the ignition coils? How do I read the prongs on my multitool reader in regards to ohms, etc?

The ignition coil has two separate windings. They are not connected. Start by testing from one terminal to connection to another. If this works then the two others should be the other circuit. The primary coil has a low resistance, up to 10 ohms. The secondary winding has a higher resistanse, up to 100 ohms or so. If you measure Mohms then the coil jhas a break.

SOURCE: how do you test ignition coil for 01 flhr

Disconnect all wires from the coil. Use a DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm Meter) to test the coil. Connect one meter lead (either one) to one of the small primary terminals on the coil and the other meter lead to the other primary terminal. Set the meter's function switch to OHMS, R x 1. You should read between 2 -3 ohms. Any higher or lower, the coil is probably bad.

Now, you may can remove the spark plug wires from the plugs and insert another set of plugs in the wires. Make sure the plugs are grounded on the heads. Turn the switch on and turn it back off. When you turn the switch back off, you should see a single spark at the plugs.

Good Luck
Steve

I need to know the firing order of a 1982 chevy s10 and also the coil has four prongs on it I understand that that one is for the 12 volts that powers it and and two more of the prongs run to the ignition...

Not sure about the firing order but I suggest you recheck the coil connections because your suggestion doesn't seem right.

The coil would mostly have two poles marked (+) and (-) though each could have more than one terminal. The really big question; is it a ballasted ignition system?
The reason I ask is two wires going to the ignition module connected to one side of the coil seems a bit unlikely. Are you certain both wires go to the module and one wire doesn't perhaps go to the starter solenoid?

In a ballasted system there is a resistor in series with the supply from the ignition switch and a bypass supply from the starter solenoid that goes live when the starter is cranking the engine. If this describes your system the bypass wire is connected to the + or supply side of the coil along with any radio suppressor that might be fitted.

To avoid causing damage you need to be certain and that mean at least some testing and preferably a wiring diagram.

No spark at plugs . Engine won't start, check fuel first, getting plenty. Then check for spark, no spark.

Have you checked your plug wires to see that are tight? The plug wire may need replaced.
