1998 corolla sputters sometimes in first gear

My car starts and idle's just fine. When I go to accelerate from a stop it struggles and sputters through first gear and once I get to about 15mph, or it shifts, everything seems to be ok. Occasionally in other gears I feel a slight sputter, but it doesn't last.

Also, this does not happen every time I accelerate from a stop. It is more pronounced after the car has been sitting for a while, and sometimes seems as if the car is going to die (but it never has). It is slowly getting worse, and since I have a tight budget, would like to get some ideas before trying to take it anywhere.

High rpm on its own when on idle and gear?

Check with your local Toyota dealer, this model may have had a recall notice out for this problem, if so they should fix it for free.

Why does my 1998 sebring idle fine but sputter badly under load.

Does it use spark plug wires or individual ignition coils for the each plug?. My 98 intrepid uses coils and occasionally I have to change them out cause it would start to miss when normal temperature was achieved. If it uses wires, try replacing them, along with the spark plugs.

Rough idle, sputtering like its outta gas but it aint.

Could be a vacuum leak as it falls off under acceleration and does not play a part then. Check for broken or cracked hoses.....

1994 toyota corolla has a runs rough at idle and lacked power, would stall sometimes at stop. Also has low idle, try timming and new plugs, and checked distriburtor cap and fuel filter and fuel regulator

I have a similar problem with one of my Toyota Corollas. It's a 95 model with the 1.8L engine (7A-FE, automatic). But unlike yours, it has plenty of power while running. Here's what it does. Occasionally the engine misses. Sometimes it will die. This is most likely to happen when you start the car and put it in reverse and start rolling without giving the engine time to adjust. I've been told by some customers that it will die sometimes when coming to a stop. But this has never happened when I drive it. I don't think it's a fuel issue because the car runs just fine when it's running.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. Replaced spark plugs and wires.
  2. Used gasoline additive fuel injector cleaner.
  3. Checked air filter.
  4. Checked vacuum hoses for leaks.
  5. Replaced PCV valve and hoses.
  6. Cleaned the air intake and throttle body with carburetor cleaner.
So far there is no change in the problem.

What I plan to do next:
  1. Check the throttle position sensor.
  2. Check the MAF sensor.
  3. Adjust the idle via the set screw.

After that I have no idea what to do next if the problem persists. The check engine light is not on so I don't think there are any error codes. Will let you know.
