You should still take it and get the computer scanned for trouble codes. If the check engine light comes on for more than 10 seconds there should be codes set.
could be a number of things (throttle position sensor, crank position sensor, bad injector, faulty coil, bad plugs,etc) i would take it to a shop and have them scan it .If the scanner comes up with multiple problems and your forced to start "throwing parts " at it, remember most electrical parts cannot be returned once opened, so it could get expensive.shops sometimes have what i call "test pilots", properly working parts to put in to see if it corrects the problem through a process of elimination. this is one way a shop can actually save you money.
VW engines intend to do this, even if you pull up at a set of traffic lights it will nearly cut out or go into high rev's. i have an a3 & once driving down the road @ about 50kpm, I lost power stearing for 1-2 seconds, stearing wheel went stiff. Take out your MAF sensor, positioned on main air intake pipe to throttle and clean it with Carberetor Cleaning spray and away you go. this is the first thing to check and normally very common.
