My 1997 Toyota Tacoma has developed a loss of power, especially when accelerating. Also the engine has a sputtering noise. My mechanic replaced the timing chain but this didn't help. Any ideas?

Check to see if the exhaust is stopped up. Maybe a bad converter.

SOURCE: ENGINE SPUTTER AND DIES ON ACCELERATION

check your fuel filter, take an air compressor and blow air through the "in" end if no or little air is coming through then just replace the filter, if fuel filter is ok then try a fuel additive to clean your injectors which are a very common problem when the engine gets gunky build up on them

SOURCE: check engine light on 2003 toyota tacoma, O2 sensor?

An O2 sensor code is a tricky one. It could mean SEVERAL different things, and I know how bad it sucks to hear this, but your best bet is to take it in and have a diagnostic ran on it at either a dealer or a good mechanic shop with a computer they can hook up to it. I had an "O2" code come up a while back on another car I used to have, and literally spent weeks and hundreds of dollars trying to fix it, and never did. Finally out of desperation took it in, paid the $90, and they found the problem and fixed it in like 30 minutes. Something I would have never even thought of was causing it (can't remember off the top of my head). After that I stopped wating time and money on check engine lights. One comes on in my car, I take it to have it ran for free at and auto parts store just to make sure it's not a loose gas cap or something, just to get an idea of what I'm looking at, then go and make an appointment to have to hooked up to a diagnostic computer to track down the problem. Good luck, and hope this helps save you some time and money.

2.4L '95 Toyota Tacoma sputters out when trying to get going.

when did it last run good, last week, last year or nobody knows/
that is good one, odd for sure that. NO scan tools work 1995 ,
2.4L stick shift. M/T
well the engine has no idea at all what gear you are in.
so my guess is, yes engine is overloading, (reverse is better )
means engine power is super super weak.
because REV has a higher numerical RATIO gear. than 1st.
so seem have more power. in REV.
sputters up is not a norm car term, but can me 2 things
  • gross engine misfire.
  • or the clutch slips. (RPM Rises but MPH goes slower.?
the engine dies/ DEAD, 0 RPM? that be>>>>
MY BEST GUESS BLIND, IS ENGINE IS:
  • ENGINE IS FLOODING , SMELL FUEL? injector leaks.
  • SPARK IS BAD,
  • OR FUEL FLOW LOSS. LEAN BURN STALLS.
  • Bad fuel, (old fuel was there before or now?).
there are lots of actual caused (parts bad)
spark parts all are old aND NO GOOD NOW. PLUGS/WIRES HV,CAP ROTOR HAS DISTRIBUTOR? YES IT IS.
BAD FUEL OR LOW FUEL PRESSURE OR CLOGGED FUEL OR AIR FILTERS.
all above assumes actual engine is ok, compression tests pass.
that is all I can figure out , not seen or driven me.
I can no see RPM and MPH dials or hear the engine sputter.

Main cause of low speed sputtering, especially when cold.

If it is sputtering after warm up and you have ruled out fouled plugs, You could be looking at an E.G.R valve that is stuck open.
If you have a big loss of power, and your air filter' is clean, check the fuel pressure at the fuel injection rail (there is a fitting on the rail just for this purpose) and see that it is not at or within five psi of the lowest allowable pressure. (your local auto parts store can look this up for you) . If the fuel pressure is good, you may a small crack in one of the coils.

Everytime i accelerate there is a sound from the engine and it has no pull/power.i

weak engine!!!! and noise... both real...!!!!
can it be made to make noise , PARKED (easy if true)
find a real mechanic that can diagnose noise, many can't.
find one that knows all the tests and has a stethoscope .
there are lots of tests to do. not just guessing.
that lost power is diagnosable too. tell him that.
or find a new mech.
find a real ASE mach. with patch on sleeve.
  1. the drop belts cold test.
  2. pry all objects connected to engine, brackets, and pry the exhaust header pipe. noise stop?

keep in mind the engine shakes normally and can make things
connected rattle and make noise, we look at that first.
then work to harder problems.
i have an electronic stethoscope that i can hear deep problems
in the engine..
are you going to replace the $2500 transmission , on a guess?
so pick that last ,right?
The power loss , can be EFI issues
did you SCAN this PCM? and get any DTC errors?????????
scan it.
if an intake valve sticks it will misfire bad (pretend #2 cyl)
the ECU then throws P0302, misfire #2 , and the HLA makes
a huge racket any pro can hear with stethoscope. at valve cover.

see some here.

04 toyota tacoma squeals on left side of engine compartment during acceleration only, what is causing this noise???.

Could be your belt is stretched and needs to be replaced, can't tighten cause it's done by tensioner. Here's a link to the belt replacement guide. To check out noise, open hood, stand at engine, have someone start, listen for noise, have person rev up engine and you find where noise is coming from. Also check tensioner.

I know you might not want to take any advice from an automotive student, but did you check your catalytic convertor? We went over this in class last week and all the issues you are having I had with my same year Tacoma. Once I replaced my cat it runs fine now.
