Especially helpful if you have annual emission inspections. The diagnostics tell you if all the emission monitors are functioning, and if any codes are stored in any of the modules or computers on the car. The more expensive and sophisticated scanners are bi-directional. they can command switches or solenoids, things like that, and see if different engine systems are working properly.
Or you can put the key in, start it and run it and follow the maxim "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I have a Lincoln LS and the heater/ac does not work at all

There are several things you can do. Your car has a diagnostic capability in the Control head of the A/C-Heater. This is a mixed benefit because after you trigger the diagnostic test, you would still need to know which part it is referring to and how to change it.

For this, go to the Web and type in the subject such as Your year and make of car, and climate control diagnostic sequence.

The other most common bad part is the blower motor resistor. Check the Web for photos. Some blower motors are under the hood, some are under the dash. The under hood models have wires running from the heater blower motor across the Firewall to a small protruding part. It usually has 1 electric connector and 2 mounting bolts. 90% of this part is hidden in the ductwork.

Sometimes you need to change this part, other times you can cheat and poke the part with a stick and it will resume working.

How long will it work? It is one of those goofy parts that is about as dependable used as it is new. This also means a new part can be just as unreliable. Carry a stick in your trunk to poke this part.

The vehicles torque converter is locking up... it will not go into gear sometimes and when you put it in gear even in neutral the car will lock up and not move... What can this be... I do not want buy a...

Unfortunately, you will need to have this diagnosed by a good reliable transmission shop. They have the necessary test equipment and can give you a definitive answer. In your case, guessing without the benefit of testing can get more expensive than the diagnostics charge. The problem may be the controller but can also be a control solenoid or another "hard part" failure inside the unit that has generated debris and has caused the solenoid to stick.

Car turns off once an a wile when i make a right turn why?

I suggested the switch because it has been a problem on many chrysler cars...To offer anything further without the benefit of doing a complete hands-on code check and diagnostics would take up a few pages of "maybes" and even so I could be entirely wrong. Therefore, instead of loading you up with a bunch of impressive but useless stuff, I recommend that you go there first, then do diagnostics if necessary...most large parts stores now read codes for free!
