No , clogged fuel filter would cause problems at higher speed , lack of power . What engine does it have ? 2.4 or 3.4 You have a sensor problem , maybe . If your vehicle has the 3.4 L V-6 it has two crankshaft position sensors A & B One is for low speed operation & one for higher speeds . I would think the 7X is bad .
The 7X CKP sensor is bolted into the center of the engine block and protrudes into the crankcase. The 7X CKP sensor reluctor wheel is cast into the crankshaft.
The 7X CKP sensor is a variable reluctance sensor. The magnetic field of the sensor is altered by a reluctor wheel that has seven machined slots, six of which are equally spaced 60 degrees apart. The seventh slot is spaced 10 degrees from one of the other slots. The 7X CKP sensor produces six pulses and one sync pulse for each revolution of the crankshaft. This signal must be present for the IC module to send a 3X reference signal to the PCM. The 3X reference is known as the low resolution engine speed signal.

This sensor is located in the side of the block .

The 24X crankshaft position (CKP) sensor (1), secured in a mounting bracket (3) and bolted to the front side of the engine timing chain cover (2), is partially behind the crankshaft balancer. The crankshaft balancer contains the 24X CKP sensor interrupter ring.
The 24X CKP sensor contains a hall-effect switch. A hall-effect switch is a solid state switching device, which produces an OFF-ON pulse when a rotating element passes between the sensor tip and a magnet. This rotating element is called an interrupter ring. In this case the interrupter ring has 24 evenly spaced blades and windows. This sensor produces 24 ON-OFF signal pulses per crankshaft revolution. The 24X signal is used for enhanced smoothness and idle stability at a lower calibrated RPM. The 24X signal is known as the medium resolution engine speed signal.

I wouldn't go to auto zone ,all they want do is sell you parts .You need a guy like in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hElvhCyZ...

Map or mass air flow sensor . Low fuel pressure do to a bad fuel pump or fuel filter would not let the vehicle run at higher speeds , would run good at lower speeds an lack power at hiway speed .

Auto zone can not check sensor data , O2 sensor switching , fuel trims - short & long term trims .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_0dS5qE...

Fuel pressure regulator diaphragm may be ruptured causing your issues as it would cause idle and low to mid range rpm issues . Higher speeds can handle the extra fuel .

SOURCE: sputtering during idle blue smoke

You are burning oil, causing the blue smoke. It is mainly cause by worn piston rings. Also will coat your spark plugs with oily residue. Try an oil additive such as "stop smoke" or another such brand to reduce burning your oil and it may recondition your seal sand stop it all together.

SOURCE: 2001 hyundai sonata 2.4 dohc, cylinder 3 misfire code

tried testing the igniter also i would look into the injector, that will cause a single cylinder misfire and probably is your problem?misfires are not noticeable at higher speeds, which im sure you know but i would go that route, could have a pinched injector or a stuck one. one easy way to test is swap 3rd injector with another and see if that one starts misfiring instead, another rought is to get a cheap auto stethoscope and put it to each injector to hear if its opening and closing, compare with others. good luck.

SOURCE: wont keep idle, car stalls out

I had this same problem on my 2005 monte carlo, took mechanic a while to figure out it was the idle air control valve. They also replace the idle air control motor.

1999 oldsmobile alero sputters rpms going up and down

Hello.

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

2001 Oldsmobile Alero. I have had at dealership for a week now and they cannot find the problem. Car is idleing in park between 1250 and 1500 rpms and idleing in drive at about 1000 rpms. They state the...

The first things I would check is the TPS and the IAC. The IAC may be electronically fine but mechanically may be stuck. The only way to tell is to remove and manually try to push in the plunger or replace with a known good. The TPS will show higher voltage than normal for idle and should be obvious if the scan tool data shows this.

Engine light and cuts out at freeways speed when climbing up hil

Hi, williamtkr.

Have you changed your fuel filter lately? I had a vehicle once whose fuel tank that had a rusty seam. Every 10,000 miles or so, the rust flakes would clog the fuel filter, and the engine would sputter and stall when the vehicle was climbing uphill. If you idled for a bit, you could drive on for a ways, until the same thing happened.

A nearly dead fuel pump could cause the same problem, I suppose.

Good luck.

2.4 olds alero enging stumble

The two most likly causes of your Idle problen are, low fuel pressure. try installing a new fuel filter. Or the other one is the Air Idle control valve, can cause the exact problem you discribed with a cold engine. Fuel Injection engines do not have a choke like carburated engines do. So the idle is computer controled thru the Air idle control valve.
