This is a fuel injector circuit fail code. The injectors need a pulse signal for them to work properly otherwise it'll go into "limp home mode" which limits rpm and the risk of killing your engine. This may mean you need to replace your distributor as it is responsible for sending all the trigger pulses to the coil packs (which probably should be replaced if they're over 10 years old...) and the ECM to time injector pulses. This really is only a guess but might be worth looking at as a starting point - there could be a bad connection or broken wire as well.
SOURCE: idles fine cuts out at 2500rpms will not get past
The mass air flow sensor, on passenger side of throttle body, if that is disconnected or faulty, the engine will cut out at 2500rpm. And act like its bouncing off the rev limiter.
