I would check the brake booster behind the brake master cylinder. The problem developed when braking was applied. When you shift from park to drive, your foot is on the brake. Try pressing brake without moving shifter and see if stalls. If so, power brake boost pump is bad. If it does not stall, that isn't your problem.

Yes, most likely a fault in the auto transmission, and the car has shut itself off to prevent further damage.

It started dying only sometimes, if you let it set 5 min or so it will start again. Drive it all day runs great then pull into parking lot or stop sign and it dies. Turns over fine but does not fire....

The Catera has a history of stalling/cutoff issues. Many are solved with the replacement of the crankshaft position sensor. It does give the symptoms you describe. I would try that first as it is fairly cheap and easy to replace. If the problem persists after that, you've at least removed one potential possibility.

25597730-01vm304gptfsbcx1qe0tia2u-3-1.jpgThis is the description of the crank sensor from AUTOZONE (cost $44.99 USD)

  • The crankshaft position sensor identifies position of the crankshaft to the ignition control module (ICM), engine control module (ECM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
  • When not replaced, vehicle may experience no start, hard start, intermittent engine shut down, misfire, engine cut out, excessive fuel consumption, CEL illumination and/or failed emission test
  • Proper alignment, positioning and spacing for faster, easier installation
  • Designed to meet or exceed OE specifications in form, fit and function

1998 Cadillac Catera can't tell if it is the engine oil cooler or a headgasket but oil is mixing with coolant and coolant and oil, what would be a sign if it is engine oil cooler

If you have a head gasket problem, you should see dense white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe if you have antifreeze (ethylene glycol) in the cooling system, especially right after starting the engine.

2000 Cadillac Catera-Engine cuts out while driving or coming to a complete stop while on a bit of a downward decline. WILL NOT RESTART for anywhere between 1-3 hours. Battery replaced, issue still...

it's the cps (crankshaft position sensor)
it cuts off the power to the fuel pump as a preventive mesure, it's a very common problems with the catera
i had the same problem with my 2000 model

My 98 cadillac catera started spitting and pouring oil really bad and i can't find out where it is coming from

If you can't see the oil, wait for the engine to cool, with the key out of the ignition and the battery preferably disconnected for safety, feel for the oil leak. There are a great many places that oil can be coming from, but large leaks tend to start at the pan or the heads.
