May be crank sensor . Does it have spark when not wanting to start hot ? Does it crank real slow ?

Testimonial: "Hi Robert thanks for getting back to me, it wants to start but needs a few pumps on excellerator eventually it starts up, it starts up fine when cold to start with but after driving around a while that's when the problem starts. I have had coolant temperature sensor, glow plugs, fuel filter element and cam crank sensor fitted plus full service, none of that has made any difference. I'm out of ideas, and so is my mechanic."

Ask about fuel pump pressure as it can be lower when hot if pump is worn .

A diesel is a compression ignition engine and when compression is too low it is harder to crank .

Well, there are some hundreds reasons why the engine can stop. Common ones are:
Dirty fuel filters, problems with electronic distribution, spark plugs to be changed, broken fuel pump, battery contact not in place, blown head gasket, rarely also a problem with anti-theft alarm motor lock can cause same thing.
Generally, if the car motor stopped immediately, with no additional symptoms is likely a problem with distribution ( no spark).
If you have experience in servicing your car you should start from checking if there is spark, and if petrol is being pumped regularly.
Best thing to do is always having it checked by a mechanic.

SOURCE: shows trouble code PO125

I would have the OBD II scanner clear the codes. Then if the code still pops up, I would have the coolant temperature sensor looked at.

SOURCE: i have a vw golf 1996 1.8se adz engine. lately

Bad thermo-time switch. This sensor will tell the ECU if engine is cold and will add fuel to the oxygen mixture. When it's in operating temperature it will tell the ECU for correct preset fuel mixture. Also if you have a 5th injector the ECU will know when to shut it off so you won't have a rich mixture. Also visa versa depending on the data it receives from the thermo switch.

There is a small vacuum pipe from the EGR solenoid that was disconnected, by reconnecting this pipe the problems (that I have had ever since I had a new head some 30,000 miles ago from a VW main dealer) have gone away.
