1989 Toyota pickup 22re. Altenator shorted & blew 80 amp fuse. Replaced altenator and fuse & now I get trouble codes 24, 31 & 51. Engine starts, but dies in 30 sec. Use gas, engine dies immediately.

Not sure if something else was taken out with the alternator and fuse. I do know what the trouble codes stand for.Not sure yet what I need to do to fix them or reset trouble codes and see if they come back. Do the trouble codes indicate what I need to work on?

Unplug, with engine off, the air flow meter, and see if it will crank and idle .

The 31 code should be air flow meter or its circuit . I would check it first as that will cause idling issues .

Testimonial: "Thank you Robert. I found a video on the AFM and went out to test it with my VO meter. Found out the night I was putting it together I forgot/didn't see the cable to plug back into the AFM I had taken off to get to the Altenator. Plug the cable in and it is running smooth as can be before the altenator and fuse went out."

Yes, the codes will point you in the right direction. What where the full codes? There should be a letter and four numbers. Comment with the full codes and I'll try and give you some ideas for what to look at.
You'll need an OBD2 scanner or diagnostic software to clear the codes after you have fixed the issue.

OBD2 is 1996 and up and they are the P codes with four numbers . 1989 Toyotas are two codes .

Truck is OBD I and by jumpering EV1 to E1, the check engine flashes a 2 digit code followed by the next code. after all codes are flashed, it repeats the codes. the diagnostics port is only 17 pins and no one seams to have a OBD I analyzer to put on the truck. To clear the codes, is one of 2 ways. Pull the positive terminal on battery for a minute or pull EFI fuse for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

I re-read the post. I must have misread it as a ‘98’ model.

Altenator failed. Replaced. Now showing short in ABS

Whats the code. Without the code we have no clue. Check all your fuses. The first step in most ABS diagnotics is to first check the fuse. I do not have access to your legend. Its also possible when you were working near a wheel you disturbed a connector going to a wheel. The code for this should say open... A short code is not a good thing since it can damage a computer.

Altenator is not charging the battery

sir , the altenator has 3 wires at the connector correct ? a white/red , a green/white and a black , the white/red wire is involved with a 10 amp fuse to do with the charging meter / gauge , the fuse located behind left side of dash .. the green/white wire is is involved with 2 fuses , a 10 amp ECU fuse and a 25 amp Main fuse located at left rear of engine compartment main box , and the black wire is involved with a main 80 amp fuse at the main box also . both of these 2 wires end up at the positive side of the battery , please verify all these fuses are good . if they are indeed good , then open wiring would be next step verify continuity on black and the white/green wires . i would post a link to diagram but autozone repair info site is down at this time . if ya need more help , please ask .
