Question about Chevrolet Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu classic with 150,240 miles. It just won't start. There's no 'Theft System' light on. It cranks but won't start. I tried all the suggestions in the different forums regarding the Anti-Theft issue. I took out the keys, closed all the doors securely and unlocked and locked the door again with the key probe. I also activated and deactivated the alarm with the key probe. When I did that, I got into the vehicle try to start the vehicle but it didn't start. I took the keys out and the door chime continued to b ing. I disconnected the battery. Next I took out the radio and the ignition switch to see if there was any loose wiring. I did not find any loose wiring but I did notice the left side of the radio was very hot like it had been used for hours. This car has a new fuel pump, new battery, new ignition switch and keys with the pass code set at dealer. I had a new key switch put in because I had a theft system issue and the car wasn't starting like it is now again. It cranks but will not start. I hear the fuel pump priming and I also get fuel gushing from the fuel line PCI when it's pressed. Any suggestions on how to get my car running? I'm miles from any dealership and its going to cost a lot to get it towed to a dealer.

I didn't have the key in the ignition when I reconnected. I've tried similar to these steps except I disconnected battery for 5 minutes then connected positive and negative terminals for 1 minute.
Thank you, Andrew T, I'll try this out.

There's no Anti Theft light on and I forgot to mention that there's no check engine light on either and it's not throwing any codes.

Andrew Taylor, the reset didn't work. Any other suggestions?

Did you have the key in the ignition when you reconnected the battery?

Resetting a Vehicle Anti-Theft System
This is how you reset an anti theft system if you have the anti-theft light on, or your car is cranking, but you have no spark.

Doing a full reset of the anti-theft system.

Disconnect both battery leads for at least two hours.
Hold the negative and positive leads together for 5 minutes to fully discharge any power.
Put the key in the ignition, but not turned on. VERY IMPORTANT!
Connect the positive lead.
Connect the negative lead in one swift movement.
Wait 15 minutes for the system to fully reset.

SOURCE: Several months ago I began experiencing a

jimmy: it sounds like the drivers door unlock tamper switch or the other switch may have failed. One side can affect the other under certain circumstances. Your trunk lock also has a switch which arms and disarms the antitheft system. Try locking all the doors, make sure the hood and trunk lid are closed and then open the trunk. Leave it open open the drivers door and try to start the car.
If it's a no start. Disconnect the ground battery cable then put the ignition key in the run position in you ignition switch. Reconnect the battery and try to start the car. It should start. This usually will override the anti theft system. One issue with this will be, whether the antitheft system will remain disarmed.
Although I have never tried this before, I know that the system will not arm unless all the doors, trunk and the hood are closed.
I could suggest this to try if the car starts as I had told you pertaining to disconnecting the battery cable, I would take the switch and unbolt it from the passenger's side of the engine compartment just forward of the shock tower. Just let it sit somewhere so it doesn't get caught up in anything moving. If there is a light under the hood of your car, remove the bulb.
Let me know how you make out.

I have had the same problem. This has happened to me three times in the past nine months or so. Per the owner's manual, you turn the key to the on position and wait about ten minutes. This resets the system and when the "Theft System" light goes out, it starts right up. I did this each time and it started right up.

You are correct twice. The antitheft is failing and turning off the fuel injectors. Go to this link for help. This is a classic GM problem and totally 100% related to the antitheft.

2003 Malibu won't start

If the theft light is not on, then it's not related to the security lock-out. This is classic fuel pump failure. If you don't hear the 2 second hum of the fuel pump when you turn the key, it has failed. If you hear it and you still have NO gas to the engine, it could be debris in the strainer or a severely clogged filter.
