1999 Chevrolet Silverado 5.3l a/c is cold while sitting still idling but once you start driving is not as cold can't figure out what's wrong?

  • Denis Houle Jun 28, 2018

The a/c temperature door is activate by vacuum and when you are idling the vacuum is at max. When you start driving the vacuum is lower so this is why the a/c temp/door release just enough to let the hot air goes into the mix air
you can have a sticky temperature door
If you want to try something look under dash and find the temp door linkage or vacuum hose and with a vacuum pump active the actuator and look if it hold the vacuum meter.

    hope it helps.

Just for fun, clamp off the heater hoses, just squeeze them flat in place to stop the hot coolant flow through the heater core.Take it for a spin and see if the a/c stays cold.Sometimes with increased hot coolant flow through the heater core with increased engine rpm (driving) and a leaky air flow door in the a/c heater assembly,it can be hard to keep the a/c air cold.

The GM's are notorious for losing fuel pressure, could be fuel pressure regulator,or a weak fuel pump....also check for rusted fuel lines that will lose pressure when sitting..both feed and return lines...

Most likely the coolant temperature sensor for the vehicle computer. Secondly, could be the tps sensor "throttle position sensor" not registering correctly or perhaps lots of other things but most likely the coolant temp sensor.

SOURCE: rough idle then stalls

Vacume leak or bad idle motor. With the car in park and running with the hood open listen for leaks moving your hand around the different hoses looking for a change in the sounds that you hear. The idel motor also makes the car idel up to 1500 RPM or so right at start-up then idel down, If it doesn;t the idel motor is likly. Check engine light is on when running? Test for codes, Follow code test charts don't skip any steps!.

SOURCE: why does my 1989 chevrolet s10 surge and idle up

You may have a bad idle air control valve, I would also check for a vacuum leak, from a vacuum hose or a broken vacuum tee.

Testimonial: "thanks for the advise i will check the iddle control valve "

1999 chevy silverado truck will start first thing in the morning, but then has problems starting the rest of the day. Sounds and smells flooded too. Starts best when its very cold outside.

In the morning if you turn the key w/o starting it and let it sit a while before starting, does it have trouble starting / smell flooded? If so, likely a bad / leaky injector.

Otherwise, I'd check the O2 sensor(s), likely have a bad one.

hope this helps.
