Need help with a Kohler engine in a Case lawn tractor that overheats.

Engine keeps overheating after 20 minutes. You can almost time your clock to it. Have already checked the ignition coil & battery.I've never seen this before. Any suggestions?

How old is the engine ?

Cylinder wall wear can cause overheating .

    Amy Justine May 28, 2018

Yes I think you are right about that Robert. Mulled it over during the night & that's what I came up with as well. Cylinder too worn. Anyone know where I can get another engine for it then? Taking into account that I live in Canada.

I would ask around about a rebuild on the one you have versus a new and used engine . New bearings, oversize pistons and rings may be more economically feasible .

Does it smoke or knock when you first get it started ?

  • Amy Justine
    Amy Justine May 28, 2018

It doesn't knock on the rod but it has a bad piston problem. It does smoke when you start it. Put new pistons in last year but wasn't happy with the middle of the cylinder. (Bad piston flop/ jobber parts)

Lawn tractors , ( ride on mowers) suffer a problem from grass clippings and dust building up under the cowl and blocking air flow around the head and cylinder if it is air cooled
another problem could be a problem ignition system or faulty battery or charging system that is not supplying enough power to keep the engine running

Testimonial: "Thanks but I've already checked that. I guess just the motor that's getting tired."

Everything Bill said plus a lean running engine runs much hotter also . The ignition coil can heat fail causing engine to stall .

You have checked for too lean a mixture ? Too much Ethanol in the fuel is bad for small engines .

SOURCE: Car overheat frequently and at time the engine sound is very loud

Several things can cause this overheating. Have you recently done a:
1. Check Hoses for Leaks
2. Check Radiator for Leaks --- Also, Change Radiator Cap ( can loose pressure there if
cap is bad)
3. Check Water Pump for Leaks. If Water Pump is bad, you will hear a loud noise from it
4 Complete Tune Up? Should be done at least 1x a Yr. Depending on how much you drive the Vehicle. Includes: Plugs, Plug Wires, Gas Filter, Air Breather Filter, PCV Valve, Adjust Timing,
Check Belts -- see if worn
5. Changed your Thermostat & Gasket and have the correct degree Thermostat in the Vehicle?
6.. Had your Radiator Rod and Cleaned out?
7. Temperture Sending Unit (located near Thermostat) could be bad
8. 02-Sensor (Generally located in the Exhaust Manifold - needs a socket with a space in it
to allow the Socket to fit over this top wire of the 0-2 Sensor )
9. Change oil and oil Filter.
10. Change Gas Tank Cap ---

Do all this yearly ( except the Radiator Rod & Clean ( do every 2-3 yrs), and you should not have
any over-heating nor stalling out, etc. and should pass emissions as well.

SOURCE: Code error P1361 Honda CIvic LX 2002

P1361 TDC Sensor Intermittent Interruption (I got this from Engine-Light-Help.com)
TDC should mean Top Dead Center.
It is the sensor that tells the computer the #1 cylinder piston is at the very top. And therefore, fires the spark plug.

Since the maintenance done above, I believe the the timing marks for the timing belt is not lined up properly. Being off by one tooth will cause this problem.

Check your oil dipstick for coolant, or a mucky substance. Your symptoms sound like a blown head gasket.

Can be many things. Cheapest would be the thermostat. Then the waterpump, most expensively would be the timing belt. 200,400,1100.

SOURCE: 1998 Cadillac Deville overheating

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage. The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side to near the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Kohler engine overheating

I am wondering what makes you think the engine is overheating?

When an engine overheats it does so when running, either because it is running inefficiently or because there is insufficient cooling.

While the engine is running, the inside of the engine is considerably hotter than the outside - the heat from each combustion can take a relatively large amount of time to be conducted through the metal components to the outside where the cooling air immediately dissipates it.

When a hot engine is stopped, the flow of cooling air also stops and so for a while the outside of the engine becomes quite a bit hotter as the heat from the inside is conducted to the outside but not quickly dissipated.

I have a 6200 Woods zero turn mower with a 20 hp Kohler Command. Runs anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes then shuts down. Put an electric fuel pump on it, no change. Good compression. Good spark.

Dear Doug,
There are three reasons you could get "run-on".
Probably you have one or both as your problem concerning the 5 - 20 minutes automatic shut off.
1) The timing is off, causing the engine to have a tiny bit of gasoline left over, which is just enough to give power to keep running.
2) The engine is getting too hot, which again causes it to keep on running after the key is shut off.
3) If the engine has a carburetor, the needle & seat could be dirty or sticking,or the float sticking, causing it too have too much gas, and that will keep it running.
God bless your efforts to fix this.

Engine Overheating

no other signs just the dash gauge, upset? what if its fibbing?
no steam, no water to ground overflowing overflow tank.
no engine pinging. no lost power, from engine, SIGNS. are key. here.
Did you consider using a IR pyro gun for $20 and find if it is really overheating,? the gun also finds clogged rad tubes, childs play like.
are you loosing coolant. that is when cold actually off the cap
and look down deep in the RAD tank? This matters, most.

which engine,? 2.5,4L or bigger?
what does no coolant going into...., mean.?
it's a loop system.
first off, we need to know does it overheat only parked?
or can you drive it from cold and keep it going and it never overheats
moving fast.?
if the engine stays cool 180F, moving fast , then your stop. and NOW it it overheats, that means the fan is dead.
or a marginal radiator, (Pyro gun to rescue)

The engine light keeps going off and on and the fan stays on for 20 minutes after the engine is off

Have a shop test this for overheating, I think you have a big problem here. The light is indicating the overheat. Do not drive this or you can ruin the engine.

Overheating

Sounds like the oil may have been too low and the engine became starved for oil causing excessive friction and the engine overheated as a result. You MUST ALWAYS have enough oil in it and change it and the filter regularly as it is the life of the engine. I hope you did not drive it or run the engine long with it overheated as engine damage can occur. Hopefully you added oil soon enough. Also, though, do not overfill the engine with oil as that can be just as bad as not enough. What happens with it being too full is the the crankshaft and engine parts then dip into the oil with every revolution...maybe 3000 or more times per minute. This makes it like an egg beater and turns the oil into a froth of bubbles and oil that the oil pump can not pump to vital parts and the engine will overheat and even burn up even though the engine is full....over full that is...of oil...so maintain the correct levels as looked at on the dipstick at all times. If you ever see it below those levels stop immediately and do not drive until adding oil.
