On my 2006 Kia Spectra 5-door my speedometer and my odometer aren't working. For the last several weeks it has only worked intermittently but for the last couple of days it has stopped working altogether. The odometer only works when the speedometer is working.
SOURCE: Intermittent Speedometer Operation
Your vehicle has the 4T60E transmission, and there is a speed sensor mounted on the transmission case that the vehicle's computer uses to compute vehicle speed, and relay it to the dash mounted speedometer. The best way to diagnose this problem is to first, hook up a scan tool that is available at automotive repair shops, and scan the vehicle for trouble codes first.Your vehicle probably has a stored trouble code along the lines of a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).After pulling codes,go to the data stream on the scan tool and look at the VSS signal that the computer is seeing, and when the speedo acts up,and stops working, look to see if the computer is seeing,a speed signal. If the vehicle computer is seeing a speed signal, then it's probably the speedo in the dash gone bad.If the vehicle computer is not seeing a speed signal, then it is likely a problem with the speed sensor mounted on the transmission,or the wires right before it.So,to diagnose really requires a scan tool, with a data stream,or you could just have the speed sensor replaced, and hope that fixes it.The speed sensor is located on the passenger side of the transmission, only accessible from under the car,but where the pass side axle actually goes into the transmission, the sensor is directly above that point, and retained in the case with a 10 mm bolt.It has two wires going to it.Good luck.

Your speed sensor has failed. The vehicles speedometer is not cable controled, it's controled by a sensor in your transmission. It's a easy fix, but the new sensor is about $80 to $100 depending on where you get it.

Sounds like either your speedometer cable, your nylon gear on the side of the tranny where the cable ties in, or the odometer itself is shot. One of those three will set you straight. If you are able, remove the cluster, take the cable off the back, and pull it out of the sheath. You will see if its broken or not from there. If not, slide it back into the sheath, then you have to find out where the sheath meets the tranny, and pull it off of there. Then, you can get someone else to watch the speedo as you turn the cable from the bottom. If it works, great, if not, then its your cluster/odometer/speedo. If it does work, the small gear in the transmission is shot.

Check the vehicle speed sensor in the transmission.

2006 kia spectra speedometer not working. Try this, I just did it and it worked. Disconnect both battery cables and touch them together for about 3 seconds, then connect them back to the battery. This causes the main computer to re-load all computer programs. It worked on my kia, speedometer now working. It also worked on my 2004 Chevy Silverado to correct an AC/Heating problem just after installing a new battery. The truck blew hot and cold air at same time with only AC on.
