You can get free diagnosis at Autozone or Advance or Oreilly to mention a few. The Codes are numbered and suggest what is wrong. Far as resolution, there are a few items which plug in without using tools.
The better scanners will categorize the most probable defect first and the least likely last. But in even the Shop Repair manuals they say to switch a part of KNOWN quality for the bad part. This is great if you have that supply of parts for free, but the rest of us usually can not return a test part.
So my advice is to look at the cost of the supposed bad part and doing it yourself buying more parts than needed versus taking it to a Mechanic and only changing the bad part. It might be cheaper to replace several parts than hire a mechanic.
