SOURCE: hummer h2 transfer case

Only way for this to happen on an H2 (AWD) is for something to break rearward of the lockup hub. Take a look at the splines between the intermediate shaft and centerdifferential or even the teeth on the forward sun gear and/or stepped pinion on the center diff.

As long as you have the t-case torn down for repair be sure to upgrade to the new aluminum mode fork (production upgrade to old plastic forks thru end of 2007 or so). You should also upgrade the rear half of the housing to the 2008 version which has a pressed-in rear prop bushing (better bushing and is also replaceable.

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive (auto locking hubs) seems to be trying to engage.

I had the same thing happen. The automatic locking hubs are faulty, causing one or both hubs to try to engage or disengage onto the front driveshaft. This makes the clicking noise and loud clunking that you hear. You may notice your steering pulling to one side of the road, because one hub is locked in. Replace the automatic hubs with new ones, do not try to fix the old ones. I liked the
convience of automatic hubs but replaced mine with manual hubs, there just way more reliable.

SOURCE: 2004 stx f150 right front wheel grinding noise,

I agree with duane_wong on this one ( not like he was looking for my approval :) ), it sounds like a problem with the IWE ( Integrated Wheel End ) on that side.
Quick test, when you are in 4H ( or 4L ) does the noise still happen ?
I would say cracked vacuum line to the IWE, or a problem with the vacuum diaphragm in the IWE. You can test by having the motor running in park, and in 2H, and check the vacuum line at the IWE for vacuum. Make sure you test to the vacuum line, not the vent line ( ends in the engine compartment, not hooked to anything )

This is a block diagram of the IWE vacuum system

Why doesnt my 4x4 work on my 2000 jeep quadra drive i just got it and i took it to a mechanic and he said that if the 4x4 wasnt working then the car wouldnt run since its a 4x4 all time. the front wheels...

Quadratrack transfer units work by way of an internal fluid coupler (same as your mechanical clutch fan but bigger) It is always on but not always engaged. It engages when the rear wheels start to slip.
It should lock in low range though. (in low range you should not drive over 15mph).
if the front wheels won't engage at all, then either there is something wrong inside the transfer case or inside the front differential. Both are usually noisy if they have failed but I've seen some that the ring gear has been removed as well as the driveshaft (sometimes) after the diff has failed, so it can be driven. Find another shop that's more familiar with that unit and have them take a look at it if you don't see anything obvious.

2004 Jeep Liberty Noise/Problem

if you are driving on hard surface ( sealed roads) in 4wd then don't as if damages the drive train
what is happening is that there is a torque wind up from the front and rear wheels running at different distances and the cluck you hear is when at some point that torque is released and allows the selection to disengage or engage
4wd is for use in slipper conditions unless you have an AWD which will become 4WD when required by you after selection of the control

4x4 transimission clunks when engaged?

When engaging the 4WD system, you are pulling the lever on the Transfer Case right? Not the transmission, it's a different gearbox.
There were several versions of transfer cases that used both full and part-time 4 wheel drive.
From your description this sounds like a part-time transfer case.
Going with that, it is somewhat normal to hear and feel a mild clunk when engaging 4WD high range, especially if you are at a complete stand-still or under full throttle.
Try engaging 4WD High while slowly rolling at idle - no throttle. It should pull in fairly smoothly.
Once 4WD is engaged it will literally LOCK the front and rear axles together. So do not do it on hard dry pavement.
These older style 4WD systems need a little "give" especially when turning. The engineers assume you are not engaging 4WD unless you are in a somewhat slippery scenario.
Many CV joints, axles, U-Joints, differentials, and transfer cases are damaged and broken by folks who don't understand this.
Reading the owners manual should provide a clearer description of what you've got.
Bear in mind that when you come out of 4WD it may not completely release, again due to hard pavement binding up the axles. You can try this: backing up 10-25 feet in a straight line, or getting one set of wheels on the shoulder or in some gravel. That should allow it to release the transfer case and go back to everyday 2WD high.
I hope this helps.
