SOURCE: Replacing a starter for a 1999 Altima

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Disconnect starter wiring from starter.
  3. Remove starter retaining bolts and the starter.
  4. Reverse procedure to install.
the bolts should be on the drivers side.
you will have to crawl underneath the car to do this task

both... put some gasket sealer on the outer sides of the new freeze plug before you tap it in.

If car shakes violently when brakes are pressed, this is probably the rotors.

If car will not shift gears, you better get your wallet out, because it is probably your transmission. An engine diagnosis will not pick this up.

  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Negative battery cable Air duct Harness protector from the harness Starter wiring at the starter Starter-to-engine bolts Starter from the vehicle

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    Starter and torque the long bolt to 57-72 ft. lbs. (77-98 Nm) on Altima and Maxima and 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) on 350 Z. torque the short bolt to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-41 Nm) Starter wiring Harness protector Air duct Negative battery cable
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Negative battery cable Air inlet tube Harness bracket Wiring at the starter Starter

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    Starter and torque the bolts to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm) Starter electrical connectors Harness bracket Air inlet tube Negative battery cable

1.6L & 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Negative battery cable Wiring at the starter Bolts attaching the starter to the engine Starter
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    Starter and torque the bolts to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm) Starter electrical connections Negaative battery cable

1.6L, 1.8L & 2.0L Engines

All you really need is a good set of spark plugs, this car has coil packs so no plug wires distributor caps etc.....Just remove the coil packs and install your plugs and your done. Good luck.

My 1996 Altima isn't getting any fire to the plugs. The plugs ,wires, dist. cap, rotory button, and coil are new.

you will find the distributor modual needs to be replaced it is located inside the distributor good luck Lindz
