There is a torque spec for the cylinder head; I don't know of one for the cover.

3.6 for 8 valves to 11 ft lbs for 16 valves

Combination wrench set 1/4 " to 1" and/or 6mm to 19mm box-end & open-end or deep-well and short socket sets same size as wrenches with a 3/8" and 1/2" drive sets, Torque wrench, soft-faced hammer ( plastic or rubber ). The proper torque for valve cover mounting bolts is 85 inch-pounds for 1994 and later years.
Remove crankcase ventilation tube and hose from valve cover, Remove wire loom clips, note the locations of the studs.
Remove accelerator cable, kick-down cable and cruise-control cable from the snap in clips on top of valve cover, disconnect them at the throttle body .
Remove the three bolts and the control cable bracket.
Remove the valve cover bolts and lift cover off. If cover is stuck use a soft-face mallet to tap on the cover to break it loose.
DO NOT PRY ON THE gasket flange.

the 2.3 and 3.1 engines need to drop oil pan.for the 3.3 engine you have to remove timing chain cover.you have to remove oil filter adapter the pressure regulator valve and the valve spring.then remove oil pump cover to oil pump screws remove cover remove oil pump gears.when installing another new oil pump lubricate the oil pump gears with clean engine oil pack the pump cavity with petroleum jelly.torque oil pan cover screws to 97 inch lbs which would be 11 ft lbs torque.oil filter adapter plate 24 ft lbs.

VALVE COVERS TORQUE IS 5 - 8 FT LBS.

Try replacing PCV valve on the valve cover-had same problem one time on a 3100 I had.
