SOURCE: transmission problem with 2001 Ford Escort

Sounds like a problem with the shift interlock. Here's how it works:You put your foot on the brake pedal, the brake pedal switch sends voltage to a solenoid mounted on your shifter. The solenoid unlocks the shifter, and you remove it from Park. When the interlock doesnt work,it's usually the interlock solenoid mounted on the shifter malfunctioning, however the brake pedal switch,or wires to and from can also be at fault.

SOURCE: Unable to shift from park into drive

there is a solenoid that releases the shifter when you step on the brake pedal.there is by the shifter a little tab that can be popped out with a small screwdriver, and using your key,put into the hole and the mechanical device will release the shifter.
it is called a shift lock override

CHECK BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FUSE AND BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID FUSE.IF BOTH FUSES ARE GOOD.PROBLEM IS THE BRAKE SWITCH FAULTY OR BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID IS FAULTY.

How to get 2000 Toyota 4Runner out of gear when battery is dead?

There is a shift lock override button on the shifter in the upper left corner, it may have a small cover on it the size of a dime or smaller. Pop this cover off and press the button inside. This will work.

Hello, the shifter can bind up due to the linkage inside the console, it's a common problem if there was anything spilled into the shift console, anything containing sugar will cause problems like this. remove the shift plate that surrounds the shifter you should b able to just pop it off, spray the inside with a solution of detergent and warm water, moving the shifter back and forth, this should keep the shift interlock from sticking.

Hi, The automatic shift lever of my 2003 Toyota 4Runner is been hard to shift up and own. I applied some force and now the automatic shift lever is moving without tension. Please help with solution

The shifter linkage has come loose -- most likely where it's connected inside the console, but the entire length of the linkage needs to be checked.

You are quite correct. You can try to adjust the cable but on those I think all you can do is replace it. I'm refering to the cable that locks the key from coming out unless it's in park, not the transmission shift cable. The actual name is "shift interlock cable" if you want to sound professional, lol.

Automatic Transmission locked in park. Will not shift. The vehicle is a 2000 Toyota 4runner with a V-6 engine.

Sounds like the shift lock solenoid is not working, there could be a couple of different things cousing this. First thing I would check is the brake light switch witch is located under the dash on the brake pedal assy.. The second thing it could be is the shift lock solenoid its self, wich is located around or near the shifter.

Does a 1994 Toyota 4Runner have a Modulator Valve? If so, where would it be located? Also, does it have a Shift Linkage? And if so, where would it be located as well? Thanks!

If your 4Runner has an automatic trans., then it has a modulator valve located on the trans. itself (should have a vacuum hose connected) and whether it's automatic or standard it will have shift linkage that connects the shift lever in the car to the trans's shift shaft.
I hope this helps.

sounds like a faulty selector cable/rod as park and reverse are next to each otheron selection, it may just require lubricating.
