My 2000 alero will shut down after about a 5 to 10 min drive then will wind over but wont start. If i put my foot to the floor and wind the engine a little then try it again then it will go

If the eml light is still on it has probably locked the car in limp mode. Your going to need a garage with the diagnostic tools to re set the fault code that the car has registered on the computer....keep your eye on the oil level on this car they are known and it is considered acceptable for the ictdi engine to use a liter of oil in 600 miles!!!!

On the engine there is a tube that supplies fuel to the fuel injectors, on that tube there is a valve, like a metal tire valve, this is the fuel pressure test port, you will need a special guage to check the pressure that screws onto that valve, Kragen and other parts stores sell this test kit, it is very inexpensive, about $20.00, but cheaper than having a shop do it for you, if you do the test and you have no pressure while cranking the engine then your fuel pump is bad, the pump is in the gas tank, a big job and dangerous due to chance of fire if you are not cautious.

My girlfriend had the same problem, so we took it to the local dealer in Costa Mesa, CA and were told she needed a new engine to the tune of 5K. We decided to take it to our local mechanic and he discovered that the “ignition control box”, which apparently has the antitheft controls too and shuts the flow of gas to the engine because it thinks its being stolen when it malfunctions, was causing the starting problem. Once, the box was replaced it worked fine. Because the IBC controls antitheft, it will need to be “reprogrammed” be someone that has access to the proper equipment or the dealer. I think the whole thing was about $800 - $900. Sure beats $5,000

run a scan tool on it and make sure there are no codes, if there is codes address those problems first, if no codes.. next time it won't start check for fuel preasure. it is probably a fuel pump getting ready to go out or they may be a large amount of something other than gas clogging the pick-up sock at bottom of fuel pump.
