All of the shafts have a specific relationship to each other its controls ware the pistons and valves are when the engine fires TIMING .
You need to find T.D.C top dead center on #1 cylinder so its at the top of its stroke in compression stroke then redo what you have just done and it will work .

each gear has a mark on it from the factory that line up with a corrrsponding mark on the engine some times they are hard to find but if you look hard enough you will find them they all must line up there is no margin for error or it will not start like now good luck Lindz

2002 pontiac grand am not starting

My brother's 02 grand am 2.2L would not start. Car has spark, fuel pump works,
good battery, plugs and plug boots new, new fuse for the fuel pump in the fuse block under the hood, everything seems to work but car won't start, crank sensor fine timing chain fine etc... The problem was a security issue. Security light on dash was blinking when trying to start the car but car won't start. The fix for me was Attempt to start the car by turning the key to the Start/Run Position.
Observe that the vehicle fails to start and that the security light is blinking.
Release key to the 'ON/Accessory' Position. (DO NOT turn key to the 'off' position.)
Allow the vehicle to sit with the key in the 'ON/Accessory' Position for no less than 12 minutes.
Turn key to off position and allow the vehicle to remain in the 'OFF' position for no less than 30 seconds. Then try to start the car. I was surprised this worked for me. 2002 pontiac grand am 2.2L. Hope this helps for you folks.

If I had a new timin chain put on my 1994 Chevycaprice with the 5.7 an if they move anything wrong will my car be off timin

A new timing chain will not affect ignition timing unless the chain is incorrectly installed then the whole engine is out of time. Why not state what the problem is instead of a generic question like you posted.

We are installing a timing chain in our 1995 Jeep cherokee sundown edition for the first time can you please send me the timing gear specs the motor is a 4.0 with air. thank you

By :"specs" I assume you need install position? To index the gears, whne you take it apart, turn the crank pulley 'till the timing mark aligns with the "0" on the timing scale. Don't turn the crankshaft again. When you are ready to install the chain, locate the mark on the crank gear and align the mark on the cam gear so they point to each other. The mark on the crank gear should be at 12 o'clock and the cam gear mark at 6 o'clock. Make sure when you put the cam gear on the cam that the location pin fits into the gear to position it correctly. Jeep recommends that after putting the chain and gears on, you rotate the engine by hand and place the crank mark at 6 o'clock and the cam gear at 3 o'clock, then count the number of pins in the chain (pins, not links) between those two points. There should be 15 pins. If you are rebuilding the engine and have the cylinder removed, it's a good time to check the front crank pulley (some have the outer ring move on the rubber). Put a piece of flat steel across #1 cylinder with a bolt through the steel extending into the bore center. Turn the engine by hand 'till the piston contacts the bolt. Make a mark on the pulley and turn the engine in the opposite direction till contact is again made. Your timing mark on the pulley should be exactly between the two marks you made. If not, make a new mark at that point and use that as your actual TDC reference. If it is radically off, replace the pulley.
When setting up cam position I always use a degree wheel. If you are installing an aftermarket cam
its important to do that. If you're just replacing a stock chain, You will be fine with the method I've outlined.

I am working on a pontiac grand prix i need to know how to adjust the timing when the new chain is on

84 should still have points. before you remove the old chain make sure number 1 cylinder is at top-dead-center for firing. Be sure the rotor in the ditributor is pointing at number 1. If you are careful in your instal and dont move anything all will be fine when you are done. If something moves be sure the timing marks and rotor are lined up again before you install chain. Timing marks should be on the crank and cam pulleys and should be lined up. Check a manual for correct alignment

How to and where are witness marks to reinstall timing chain on a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM 2.4

YOU WILL SEE A HOLE IN THE CAM GEAR THAT A 3/8 BOLT WILL FIT INTO. PUT A BOLT INTO THE HOLES OF BOTH CAM GEARS. THEN LINE UP THE CRANK PULLEY KEYWAY AT ABOUT 12 O'CLOCK WITH THE MARK ON THE ENGINE BLOCK.

MAKE SURE TO COMPRESS THE CHAIN TENSIONER AND RELEASE IT WHEN THE CHAIN IS IN POSITION.
