High idle speed when the engine is cold

It likely has EFI (electronic fuel injection) and an idle air control valve that regulate idle speed. They can get gummed and fail to have a fast idle when cold, or get stuck the other way, and have a too fast idle all the or regularly take its time slowing down after you take your foot off the gas. An engine temp sensor can also cause a lingering high idle if it reports the engine as still being cold after warm up.

High idle is usually caused by a vacume leak. First place to check is the cold air intake manifold. All hoses, throttle body, and sensors. Throttle Position(TPS), Mass Airflow(MAS), Idle Air Control Motor (valve) IAC. Controls Idle speed

A malfunctioning throttle system can cause both a high idle as well as an engine stall.

A dirty air intake or cracked air intake tube is often the culprit.

Hi Clucas, If you're talking about a cold engine, the vehicle is fitted with an automatic 'up idle' system. Depending on how cold the ambient temperature is. The colder it is outside the higher the idle, until the engine reaches normal operating temp. The engine should then settle down to the correct idle speed. If however the cold start raises the speed to more than 1350, have a scan carried out.
