it is an automatic not a manual
the gear selector is by lever and the lights will show where the selection is but not that it is in gear
The problem is in the transmission
IF it is an EFI vehicle then run the fault codes and look for a problem servo/solenoid for the torque convertor clutch or TCM fault
Hi sad to say this gearbox requires valve body repairs ,replacement of dextron 3 ATF fluid and filter.clutches and friction plates should be checked replaced if worn.Torque converter should be checked out.If gearbox has electronic functions a diagnostic report should be done before stripping.A conventional auto gearbox pre 2000 model could be fitted with a external modulator switch causing present fault ,over powering the above mentioned faults.
No idea here as to what you mean but as this vehicle is a 95 then it should have a dipstick for the autobox and this is what you use to check the oil level ,start engine and put handbrake on ,chock back of drive wheels and then put in reverse gear and check the gearbox oil level .Anything else i wouldnt know as here in europe nealy all cars are manuals
It sounds like your transmission is in limp mode. Your first gear will never make it to 1st gear, the gear ratio is to low and the engine would over rev causing it to shut down.
Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST. This guide is meant for problems that do not show up as PCM codes (like shift A&B solenoid failures, for example). Many problems that show up as transmission issues are actually PCM or electrical, and may be external to the transmission. Try a different PCM, and check for chafing where the cables come out of the PCM. What is "limp-home mode" ? This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear. Start with the reputable transmission shop that can test your transmission and the reputable ones will do this free of charge and will take there time to explain to you your SRX transmission issues and what actions need to be take to resolve the problem. Hello. I had the same problem when the Check Gearbox light came on, it would be very sluggish. It turned out to be a small sensor in the transmission that lets the car know what gear it is in. It started to go out slowly and only sometimes would send the information.
I have a 2002 X type (2 litre. done 44000 miles), dash showed gear box problem, (red circle light up). I pulled out and turned the engine off. 5 minutes later turned the engine on. The engine running but the car would not drive either in drive or reverse. Turned the engine off again and on the car driving but not much power. The care is taken to the Jag. dealer and told is misfiring + some gear box faults. Suggesting to change some coils and see (cost about £200+). also possible need to change the gear box costing about £2500+. Please advice. Shall I go ahead with the repair? Should I part exchange.
You have a bad gearbox position sensor located on the transmission. When the transmission computer sees the fault in that sensor it goes into a protective mode in your car starts out in second gear that's why it is sluggish. This is a very common failure on that car. The heater issue is not related.
I just kept finding out information and have just about confirmed it would have to be a faulty inhibitor switch, but finding a cheap one is another matter
