How do I get the shift lever housing off of a Nissan Xterra 2002 automatic transmission

The neutral safety switch on an automatic transmission (also known as a park/neutral position switch or neutral start switch) is usually mounted to one side of the shift lever (top of the transmission), around the base and near the bottom (front-wheel drive models); other models have the switch attached to the left

most likely you have a transmission problem (not shifting gear). the least thing you can do is to check the fluid (transmission oil) level.

The shifter needs to be inspected.If the gears are shifted automatically.The shifter assembly is got misaligned,it has to be open and realign.

There are many other possibilities.But if it was working right up till now and suddenly this auto shifting occurred then its shifter assembly realign issue.

Personally, I would take it back to the tech and make him do it (my customers would not hesitate).

With that said, the answer to your question is YES. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (if your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission) is located on the right rear of the transmission housing.

Use NISSAN Type Matic J ATF, factory fluid is the best way to go, other types may cause damage to your tranmission or poor shift performance

dirty transmission filter. try 2 change that. mite be 2 late tranny is ready 2 go. like the bands in the tranny mite be getn worn out
