I have a 2006 HHR with no reverse lock out. I have read replacing the shifter assembly with a 2009 will cure the problem. Will this later shifter work with the cables without problems.

Right now you don't have to step on the brake to move the shiftier into any gear and you could push the shiftier into reverse while driving if something or someone hits the shiftier.

Yes 2006-2010 shifters and hardware are 0interchangable., check brake pedal to switch adjustment for solenoid interlock release arm, interlock solenoid may be damaged or misaligned. when you depress brake pedal the brake switch sends signal to the BCM (Body Control Module) in turn sends current to interlock solenoid causing arm to retract releasing shift lever. Please note that interlock solenoid is mechanically actuated to the extended lock position when interlock solenoid is not electrically energized.

SOURCE: 2002 PT Cruiser Shifter Wont Go Into Reverse - Manual 5 speed

I had the EXACT same problem on my 01 PT. Very easy and inexpensive fix. There is a bushing that is located under the air box under the hood. It is in the shifter linkage. It falls apart from the heat of the engine and age. Mine was completely gone! The dealership didn't sell the bushing itself, they wanted to sell the whole arm for $$! I found this place that sells polyurethane bushing that work great. They sell you two, one for under the hood and one under the console. I just replaced the one under the hood.
All you have to take off is the air box, press the bushing into the sleeve then press it onto the pin and you are done. This place sells them as race parts that gives you a tighter shift.

SOURCE: car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

My 2006 HHR ignition switch would not allow key to move out of "run" position. Lock cylinder came apart. No cylinders available in country. Why?

shifter pin is broken that is why the switch will not come out of run. the shifter assembly needs to be replaced to fix the key not turning back.

Same problem...

What you might want to try is go to the dealers parts department. Ask about the part number your mom bought. See if the number is the same as the 2009. Now part of the number series may indicate 06,07,08, and so on but a book called the "OSI" (means obsolete, supercede, interchange) would list replacements.
If you get good information it would be hard to deny your mom a reimbursement. Especially if the part she paid for is the free replacement on 2009"s.

Key stuck in ignition

This is a VERY common problem and there is a campaign though I am not sure it ever made it to full recall. The ultimate answer is to have the ignition switch replaced. In the meantime, you'll need to be able to get that key out. On the bottom side of the steering column there is a one inch square rubber plug that you pry out. You can then use your pointer finger to push the switch in. This will release the lock and let you turn your key to the off position and remove. You may want to leave this plug out as you'll be doing this a lot until it is repaired.
