Black smoke is generally a fuel mixture problem. It can be caused by lots of things so more investigation is needed. Too much fuel or not enough oxygen will generally cause this.
Check for a blocked air filter or air intake
Faulty Injectors putting in too much fuel.
Faulty fuel pump (again, too much fuel).
Poor timing, again allowing too much fuel.
Also check the EGR valve. This is designed to recirculate exhaust gases for efficiency although they can go wrong causing poor performance and smoking issues.

From 53 reg onwards, diesel pump is under R.H. rear wheel arch, hidden by the plastic wheel arch liner. Older versions have combined fuel pump/sender in the tank (under R.H part of rear seat).
You should be able to hear a faint purr from the pump when ignition is turned on but engine not yet running.
