1997 Lincoln Continental when you turn the wheel it creaks real bad.

Everytime I make a turn or just turn the steering wheel it creaks real loud. I have checked the power steering fluid and its good. It sounds like it needs to be greased or something. I had a Ford Taurus a few years ago and had to have the Rack and Pinion replaced. Can you help me out I can hear it inside the car but it is so loud you can hear it standing by the car. It makes the sound when I turn the steering wheel.

Where do you hear this creaking ? Steering column - inside the vehicle or out side the vehicle .

  • Donna Murphy Feb 11, 2018

It makes the noise when I turn the steering wheel either way. It is so loud you can hear it inside and outside of the car. I just had all new shocks and struts put on and did away with the air suspension,if that helps to know. It drives much better . I had some creaking when i turn before I had the shocks replaced but not as bad as now.

You had the struts replaced ? did they replace the bearing plate on top of the struts or use your old springs an bearing plate ?

MY SUGGESTION TO YOU IS THAT THERE IS NO REASON TO GO TO THE DEALER FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS BECAUSE IT WILL COST YOU 3X AS MUCH AS IT WOULD AT A PRIVATE SHOP.THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS THAT ONLY THE DEALER CAN HANDLE,BUT ANYONE CAN DO THIS ONE.IVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR 20 YEARS.

SOURCE: rack and pinion leak

It needs replaced a rebuilt unit cost $350.00 and you need the tools to remove the tie rod ends and you have to unhook the steering wheel, if you have a hoist it's not to bad but a do it yourselfer it's a pretty big job, the fluid is that color because it's sucking air into the fluid because of the leak and the shaking is caused by one side not holding hydrolic pressure because of the leak and wore out inner tierod ends. If you do do it you need a whole lot more information and much more instructions to do it, afterwords it will have to be alingned, having done it before and having the proper air tools I can do one in three hours. You might take a week but it would be a learning experince.

Is the fluid full enough? there should be a dipstick to tell where the level should be. Also is the belt tight enough? Wires loose?

SOURCE: power steering problems with 1997 ford taurus

What! Not likely the pump, if it has fluid. Most likely the steering rack is shot. Have a reman installed and flush the cooler or the new one will fail. Install a FILTRON magnetic filter, in the return line also. Use Mercon or Mercon V Fluid, not auto part store **** and never any sealers. If you want ,you could make up a blend of Lubegard and Mec V. I do all the above,If it isn't like a new car after all that, check out the ball joints , but especially the bearing assy on top of the struts. They could be half your stiffness. What causes these steering racks to fail ,is because, no one changes the fluid every couple years, just like you never flush brake fluid or trans fluid. I made a living in the trans business ,just on Taurus and Chrysler Caravans, for that very reason. Don't you just love neglect?

Were is the power steering pressure witch located on lilcoln continental 1997

You will have to go under your car, where the steering wheel shaft connects to the steering housing. there in that area you should see it screwed into the housing. should have some wires hooked to it.

2000 Lincoln makes creaking noise when turning right.

You should go to a front-end alignment place and have them check the Balljoints and tierod ends. Some of the front wheel drive cars have Upper strut bearings and Constant Velocity joints.

When you hear the creaking sounds it means the parts are rusty and rubbing together. They are considered "Lubed for Life" and if they are dry and rusty their life is gone.

These parts hold the 2 front wheels together so they both turn with the wheel. The Balljoints hold the weight of the car and are the framework for the wheels.

Poor alignment caused by worn parts will destroy tires early. It is not something to ignore but it is possible only 1 part is bad out of many. It is customary to align the wheels after front end work. Some front wheel drive cars need periodic alignment on the back wheels too. So you can believe this if a shop suggests it.

My lincoln continental ford locked its self. the steering wheel and everything is locked. how do i unlock it?

The 3 most common causes are a security issue with your Anti theft system, a bad brake pedal switch, or a faulty ignition switch. Either of these would cause your steering wheel to lock up.

The cruise control and the horn do not work.

You have to remove the steering wheel after you remove the airbag. this is a dangerous repair if you have no real world experience.

Lincoln 1997 Continental

This is caused by the voltage to the power steering module being too low. That is causing the power steering to dis-engage. You should have your charging system check. You probably have a bad battery or a bad alternator.
Some auto parts stores and Sears will do it for no cost.

98 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL, DROVE TO WORK JUST FINE, AND THEN STARTED BACK UP AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VERY HARD TO TURN. I PUT THE CAR ON A LIFT AND TURNED THE WHEEL AND SAW THAT THE FLUID WAS BEING FORCED...

You added too much fluid. You should reduce it too the proper level. You can dip it out.
I have posted the solution to your hard steering problem in your other posts.

Hard steering

Check the Serpentine belt. If it's loose, not only will the power steering be very difficult but it will tend to run hot and eventually overheat. The belt may be worn and slipping as well. If this isn't the issue, you may have a leak coming from the power steering hose (you had to add fluid). Have someone in the car turning the wheel while you watch under the hood watching the power steering pump. With the fluid full, you should immediately see any leaks right away while the wheel is being turned. Hope this helps with your problem. Best of luck to you!
