A couple of things. Your thermostat could be stuck or you have air i your coolant system. Bleed your coolant system. If the coolant is low, you can also have that issue so check for a coolant leak. If you check your oil and it looks like chocolate milk, then you could have a blown head gasket. Check all of these first.

the best thing to get is the Haynes manual for your car at advanced auto or autozone or somewhere like that and the book will tell you how to take everything apart and put it back. i think the manual is about $16.00

SOURCE: temp gauge cold and then heat turns not so hot

make sure the antifreeze is full. if so, replace thermostat and refill

faulty stepper motors in your cluster. and its 03-06 GM vehicles that are affected. and no there isnt a glitch in all chevy cars you smoke too much u paranoid freak. you can fix this yourself for about 40 bucks. heres how i did it. click the link

SOURCE: Gas Gauge not working

sending unit is in the gas tank. you must take down the gas tank and remove the fuel pump/ sending unit assembly

Two things I have run across in tyhe Implala is a bad water pump causing this or air in the system that causes the temp gauge to spike.

You didn't give the engine size, so I'll give what my manual shows.
The 3.4L engine----- 2nd one in from the left, in back of the engine.
The 3.8L engine------2nd one in from the left, in front of the engine.
