My neice was driving home from work and her 2002 Kia Rio just died. I towed it home and the Batt was dead. I charged the batt on slow charge for two hours then the car started. I took my load tester and the Alt was not charging. I checked all fuses they were good. Changed Alt. Still not charging. Checked black wire from alt to batt. Ok. What energizes the alt? The wht/grn wire? Ecm?

The Alt I took off tested good by the auto parts store I bought it from 10 months ago. But because I do alot of business with them, they warrantyed it out and gave me a new one. Thats the one I put on and still not charging. Checked 80amp main fuse/good. The 25amp main fuse/good. The 15amp fuse good. The grn/wht wire from alt goes to a short connector, but haven't found that connector. Suppose to be under left side of dash. That grn/white wire also goes to Ecm. What am I missing.

Did you test the new alternator before putting it in. May be bad. Once you put it in turn the key and it self energizes unlike the older cars like vw. So if you forgot a wire or a plug to the alternator if it's good. Once the battery is connected it should be all set. So if that's not the problem you have to start looking for bad connections or melted wire and shorted a online fuse. Check your fuse box for any bad fuses.

The car died lights went dim then engine cut out with the key on there is no batt light on the dash. I unpluged the 2 wire conector at the alt and started the car after I charged the batt. still no batt...

sounds like you either have a loose wire that is preventing the alternator from charging the battery and keeping you going or the alternator has a bad diode. Take it to an auto parts store and have them test both battery and alt while the car is running.

Battery was weak so i put a charge on it. car slow to crank over but started but will not keep running.

+charge batt to full, start the car, then turn on your headlights and heater blower. if the car dies and wont start back/dead batt, check/replace alternator

Kia rio 02 died while driving down highway

The battery is only use to start the car, once the car is moving the alternator takes over and charges the battery. I sounds like the alternator is bad. You take the alternator to Napa, Auto Zone or Advance auto part and have them check it for you.

if batt.gets drain while driving, charging system is not working!by comment,u knew that!u can check wiring connection at alt.for bad contact, corrosion or damage wiring, check for batt. voltage at big red wire at alt.,but these models are prone to alt. failure,if connections are ok,pull out alt. have it check at part store they do not charge for this,

2003 Kia Rio, died while driving, and wouldn't start back up.

Makes no sense. car would not die if a bolt fell out of the starter. It would die if the alternator was not charging and the battery went dead. Noise could be a belt has come off..You will have to give everything a good looking at and test a few things especially that the battery is fully charged. Any questions about what you find, I'm here!
