I had the same issue on my '01 530i. The window stayed in one place and I could hear the motor going up and down. It took me 30 mins to fix both the Driver's window and the front Pass window. Remove the door panel, then pull back the plastic liner. There are 2 clamps that hold on to the window. You will need to loosen these 2 clamps (that ride on vertical guides), either find the rubber pads (2 per clamp) that wedge between the glass and the clamp. (one on each side of the clamp.) or purchase new ones. Replace these rubberpads, slide the window back into place. Gently snug up the clamps, and carefully raise the window until it seals. This will set its position. Now tighten up the clamps again. Done. One other issue that sometimes occurs is that there is a plastic clip that needs to be replaced that holds the cable to the clamps, but normally only one clip goes at a time and the window will twist and some times break. That doesn't sound like your issue. Good luck.
If the car is having trouble maintaining idle (the tach dips and car dies) the common causes are the idle control valve and camshaft position sensors. The cam sensors failing will be indicated by a check engine light.
The ICV can removed and cleaned with good results (I think there is a write up on bimmerfest) or purchased new for about $100.
While you are in there check the intake boot that is Y shaped for cracks, it's prone to fail and will mess up your idle too.

If all windows stopped workin at once it's a relay ... You can usually find them under your steering wheel ... You more than likely have to remove the panel under the steering wheel and you'll see them... I forgot which one it was but call a BMW dealership ... And let them know what relay you need...

I had the same problem - driver side fine, passenger side front not working/slow or the back seat. You need to replace the window motor on the passenger side. Yes, there are two motors. It's pretty simple if you are handy with some tools. The hardest part is getting the 4 mounts that hold the window motor to the door off. The are factory riveted to the door, so I had to grind the outsides off and tap them out. Just watch the spring lever that holds the window bar for going up and down. I didn't pay attention and it snapped back - nearly broke my thumb.
