Was it in radio or mechanical noise? Could be throwout bearing of manual transmission. does it go higher when you rev it or drive it? higher when driving would be a transmission issue, revving only would be a throwout bearing. if it is electrical, there is a bad ground at the radio.

The problem will possibly be something connected to the wheels as the noise changes with road speed.
Firstly have a walk around the car and check the bodywork. It could be a loose panel or piece of trim flapping in the air flow over the car.
The most obvious mechanical things to get checked will be the actual wheels, tyres, wheel bearings and driveshafts.
Have the brakes checked anyway although they give more of a grinding noise.
If these are ok you might be looking at gearbox issues.

Could be a tyer, or a brake pad catching. if the sound changes when turning at speed ie stops its the breaks if carries on no matter it would be the tyre. other thing could be wind flowing through a gap. can also be the engine air intake it would need to be determined its area before a proper assessment can be achieved.

Back pressure from a clogged catalytic converter can also cause this problem.

sounds like a wheel bearing maybe faulty from your text it sounds like it could be the osf you could try jacking vehicle up with engine off handbrake applied and in neutral spin the wheel and see if it makes noise or wiggle it to see if it has any play possibly take off greade cap and see if any grease in bearing /

Whinning noise when engine is off

Whinning Causes
The whining noise you hear coming from the power steering pump is one of three things. The first is more of a loud "hush" than a whine; this is the sound of fluid rushing through the bypass valve when you turn the wheel all the way to one side or the other. Sometimes the bypass valve malfunctions or doesn't open all the way, causing pressure to back up in the pump and cause your engine rpm to drop. The second and third causes result from cavitation -- vacuum pockets created behind the rotor's vane blades as a result of extremely high pump action -- or air in the lines.

My 52 mini suddenly started making a whining noise, its an automatic, i didnt get any any warning it ciasts fine and reverses but once you put your foot on the accelorater the whining noise slows the car...

Check your transmission fluid level, as recommended in the Owner's Manual. Also, if your car is equipped with power steering, check the fluid level in the power steering reserve.

If all fluids are at recommended levels, see if you can locate the noise. If it is in the engine compartment, try to determine if the noise is coming from any of the serpentine belt pulleys.

Sometimes the bearings on air injector pumps fail in higher-mileage vehicles, first causing a "whining" noise, and ultimately resulting in the serpentine belt "chirping" or squealing on acceleration. Best you can do is make sure all fluids are at recommended levels, then try to pinpoint the source of the whining noise for further diagnosis.

Hope that's helpful!.

Hard to get in gear whining noise when clutch peddle is depressed. and where to put clutch fluid.

Get it to a garage - if the clutch has worn out - 9 years old and its quite possible - you don't want to have to have a new gearbox as well.

Cars cost!!

GOOD LUCK

MINI cooper s air conditioner fan makes a noisy whine. when I make a sharp left turn it stops but eventually the noise returns. It is a fan in the airconditioner. How do i access it so I can fix it?

Sounds like an alignment issue. Loosne the motor mounting fasteners, and try to move the motor to another position...if not, pull the motor and investigate..

Rear end whining

if you have a constant whine that raises pitch the faster you go, you have improper backlash adjustment in the differential (rear end), if you have a whooping noise that whoops faster as you drive faster then you have a bad wheel bearing, both can be the result of low fluid level in the rear end.

Steering makes a whining noise - where is the fluid reservoir?

the suspect part for a power steering whine is the power steering pump, flush (very important) the system and replace the PS pump..

A constant whizzing

that whining noise is definately your power steering pump. the earlier models eg 2001-2003 just have noisy ones. so they say, if that noise become really excessive; its an early warning that its gonna fail. the newer pumps are much quiter, but i was quoted approx 1200+ CND for a new pump. I have a 2003 cooper, and the whining noise is loud. only once has the steering been really stiff, but i resolve that problem by restarting the vehicle. watch out tho, the power sttering could fail on you while your driving around a corner, and if you dont have both hands on the wheel, you'll go strait.
