How to remove the starter motor as it looks impossible to ge to the nuts to my old Ford Transit ,are there special tools .I don't want to make any small holes to have to remove it

    disconnect battery negertive terminal
undo and remove the 10mm (spanner size) nut and disconnect the solenoid wire

undo and remove the 13mm (spanner size) nut and disconnect the main starter lead and the alternator wiring

undo and remove the 13mm (spanner size) bolt through the lower mounting point on the starter, this has an earth lead on it, push the lead to one side

undo the top starter bolt (same as lower bolt) and remove the starter from the engine. The top bolt can't be removed from the starter with it in place, and it can't be fitted after you've put the motor back either so don't forget it!

What size star but do I need to remove the starter from my 06 forenza

Ok guys. Here is the starter removal process that works on a 2006 Suzuki Forenza. Secure the vehicle on jack stands & engage the parking brake. There are three bolts connected to the solenoid & two blots holding the mounting bracket. The first bolt is on the same side as the solenoid. To get to the second bolt with ease, you should first remove the air intake from the throddle body to gain access to the second mounting bolt. I used a 19 inch socket & a couple of extensions to remove the bolt. You will see the bolt by looking down past the iac valve on the drivers side of the engine. There is also a hose bracket connected to the bolt & you can trace the bolt to the starter. Problem solved.

Need advise on removing the top mounting bolt on a starter of a 1998 ford explorer

Hi Jcetkt, Make sure the park brake is fully engaged. Chock the wheels and prepare a long extension with the correct size socket spanner, (A box wrench set onto a long extension) Slide under the vehicle and loosen it from the bottom. It may be a good idea to have a pal guiding the wrench from top side. Regards John

How do you remove the starter out of a 2003 ford focus?

Removal
1. Disconnect the car's negative battery cable.
2. Raise the car's front end with its floor jack and support it on axle stands; make sure you set the parking brake first.
3. Disconnect the air cleaner's outlet tube from the throttle body if your model has an SPI engine; loosen the hose clamp with pliers.
4. Unbolt and disconnect the power-steering pump using your wrench and set the pump aside. Do not disconnect or stretch the pump's lines. This should only be needed if your Focus has a 2.3 liter engine.
5. Unscrew the starter motor's mounting bolts using the wrench and then pull the motor off the dowel sticks on the transmission housing; you might need to angle the motor to remove it. Unscrew the nuts and disconnect the motor's wiring.

Installation
1. Connect the wiring and nuts to the replacement starter motor and slide it onto the dowel sticks, then tighten the mounting bolts with the wrench.
2. Reconnect all components that were disconnected--bolt the power-steering pump in place and connect the air cleaner outlet tube using its clamp.
3. Lower the car off the axle stands and reconnect the battery cable

How do i replace the starter on my 1991 ford thunderbird 3.8L V6

moz-screenshot-4.pngmoz-screenshot-5.png
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  3. Tag and disconnect the wiring at the starter.
  4. If necessary, turn the front wheels fully to the right. On some later models it will be necessary to remove the frame brace. On many models, it will be necessary to remove the two bolts retaining the steering idler arm to the frame to gain access to the starter.
  5. Unfasten the starter mounting bolts, then remove the starter from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Position the starter motor to the engine, then secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm) on starters with 3 mounting bolts and 15-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm) on starters with 2 mounting bolts.
  2. If removed, tighten the idler arm retaining bolts to 28-35 ft. lbs. (38-47 Nm).
  3. Connect the starter cable to the motor. Tighten to 70-110 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  4. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

I need to replace the existing starter in my 2003 Ford Taurus wagon. I know that I have to jack the car up in order to remove the old starter. What I don't know, is how many bolts need to be removed...

Because of the Variety of mounting methods there are 2 to 4 bolts that should be visible as you look at the starter itself. Not counting the wiring connections. If this a sideways mounted motor with the Starter mounted on the front of the motor there will be 2 bolts holding it in place. If the motor is mounted regularly with the transmission extending under the vehicle the starter in on the rear of the motor near the firewall and will have up to 4 bolts holding it in place but most likely no more than 3. I would recommend getting a Haynes repair manual on the vehicle for more detailed instruction on removal and installation. This manual or a Chilton's manual are both available at the major Auto Parts stores and are fairly inexpensive.

It could be 3 things: 1) Your battery needs to be replaced. If your battery is new or has already been replaced it could be 2) Your starter or 3) Your alternator.
