2000 vw passat smells like gas when driving why?

If it is a diesel , then you have a fuel container in the trunk that has dumped over and is leaking gas into the trunk area?
If your Passat is a gasoline engine , then I am going to say you have a fuel leak (possible fuel line rot).
Start the car and leave it in park... exit the car and inspect the underside for drips...alternatly you may choose to park the car in a spot you know is free of debrise and stains etc. and run the car there while parked for a few minutes and then pull it forward and inspect the ground for new fuel staining.

I have a 98 vw passat glx. the button which opens the fuel pump door does not seem to work. i have to press it about 20 times before the door opens. any solutions???

chances are the spring that opens the flap is weak, just replace the spring.if it gets stuck shut pull away the carpet/trim from inside the trunk to get to the flap wire.

Unable to open fuel tank flap on a Volkswagen Passat cc. with the push button release. is thier another way.

You need to remove the lining by the fuel door in the trunk. Once you get the lining loose you can bend it out of the way and remove the solenoid that is held in place with 2 philips head screws.

I CAN'T GET MY GAS FLAP TO OPEN TO GET GAS.ANY SOLUTIONS?

I had the same problem with my 1999 Passat, whose power lock switch was also not working. It seems that when the mechanic fixed the power lock switch this also resolved the issue with the fuel flap.

Until I had this done, I had to do what goeffreyh above said, pull the upholstery in the trunk aside and pull back on the plastic tab to open the fuel door manually.
