I would start by checking all the fuses under the hood.
There is a fuse called IOD which the factory leaves out and gets put in at the dealer.
That fuse could be bad.

If you have the same pulley arrangement that most 4.0 engines have that pulley is an idler not a tensioner. Your power steering pump has a pivot bolt, and a slide under the pump. You adjust belt tension using the pump.

SOURCE: how to replace timing cover gasket on a '97 jeep grand cherokee

Pull the alternator brackets and front engine brackets off until you get to the water pump. You will also need to remove the fan shroud and then the fan. Remove the water pump and then you will see an aluminum cover and that will be your timing cover. remove the cover and clean all the gasket off the engine and the cover. use a razor blade, and make sure there in no oil or grease on the parts where the gasket lies. Put your gasket on, bolt the cover back on with the new gasket and repeat the teardown process in reverse.

Can a 98 jeep grand cherokee 4.0l perminant 4+4 run without the front propshaft

The front propshaft on my full time 4 wheel drive 94 Grand Cherokee was vibrating badly years ago so I removed it and my Jeep has driven just fine without it since, no vibrations.Doesn't seem to cause any harm that I know of.

The plug should be located in the wiring harness on the drivers side under the hood. If you cant find it there look under the dash on the drivers side. There is also a on/off sequence in which you can make the check engine light actually flash out the codes. I have the manual for the grand cherokees. email me if you would like the key sequence to make this work.

T-86: The T-86 is one of the three speeds used with the many CJs and Jeepster Commandos with the "Dauntless" Buick V6.
T-98: The T-98 varies only slightly from the T-18. It was used from the 50s until 1970 in different Jeeps.
