My 1990 oldsmobile delta 88 royalle brougham will start run then shutoff after a while of driving. i will turn the key and the security light comes on and will chime 3 times. everyone says it has no vats system, but this sounds like a vats issue. someone replaced the original key so i do not know if it ever had the chip key. i need to find the vats module...but not sure where to look. looked under the drivers side and behind the glove box without luck. can someone help

This is a very common problem on GM vehicles. The security system is known to fail. Basically when you insert your key, the system checks for certain OHMS resistance. If the system cannot get the correct signal from the key, it assumes the key is incorrect and goes into SECURITY lockout mode. (prevents hotwiring) This has been happening with GM;s for a very long time. There are ways to bypass this now. Read through this page for info, solutions as well.

if it has the 3300 engine it is located on the intake manifold. it is a vacuum type (kinda reminds me of a black mushroom) so it will have a small hose attached to it. 2 bolts to replace.

When the engine dies, does it start right back up? Usually when the coils go out they do exactly what you are saying. But the car will not start for about an hour after it dies. Or will start, but run really rough. I don't know if your car has an idle sensor. Or throttle positioning sensor. I don't think Olds came out with them until 91. If it does have one, then it will be on the throttle body, in front of the throttle actuator.
