Old, loose timing chains can and will jump a. tooth and through timing off. Check timing. U could squirt little gas into intake to determine if its fuel related.

Make sure the battery is fully charged. If the engine will turn over check for actual spark.

  • myxelpyxel Nov 16, 2017

Make sure the battery is fully charged. If the engine will turn over check for actual spark. If no spark check every connection. Everything should be tight and clean
If spark check electric fuel pump connections both electrical and fuel connections.

If none of the above work it might have jumped timing.Your engine can have either a rubber belt or an actual chain.

SOURCE: my 1996 cavalier Z24 wont start

pull a wire and ground it via useing a screw driver at the end of the spark plug boot to check for spark / if their is no spark / ignition control module / there is also a crank shaft position sensor / located on the back side of the motor under the coil packs / pain to get to / also the nuetral safty switch / to check the neutral safty switch diconnect the big harnest at the neutral safty switch put a fuse tester to the yellow wire / have someone turn the key / with the tester grounded the light should come on / now we know the ignition switch has power going through it. if there is a no power at the yellow wire / bad ignition switch / does the car have a relay located at the top of the radiator core support (up by the radiator looking down drivers side)if it does not gm will install one for free / if there is / look for the purple wire coming out of the relay and Follow it down to the starter / reconnect the neutral safty swtch / touch the small S (the smallest screw) terminal on the starter soilenoid / have someone turn the key forward check the light / this will detemine if the relay is good / CAREFULL NOT to touch the big starter wire with the little one it will jump the starter / I HAVE THE SAME CAR / Hope this helps

SOURCE: Vehicle dies while driving down the road.

could it be the A/C pump kicking in. might be boging down the motor or electrical circuit, not letting the injectors get enough power. This could happen if the bearings are going bad in th A/C pump or there is a short in it. Just an idea. sounds like you have done the main components.

Kohler courage 6.5hp wont start?

Could be a short in the coil for the sparkplug. Check the magneto- pull the plug wire off the spark plug and hold it close to the frame of the while someone tries to start it. Keep all parts of your body clear of the mower- only hold the sparkplug wire. When the motor turns over, verify spark from the wire to the frame. If no spark, you likely have a bad magneto coil. If you have a good spark, try taking the air filter off and use some engine starter fluid (not much) and then try and start again. If it starts and runs for a second with the starter fluid, you probably have a problem with your fuel not getting in, which leads to troubleshooting the carb and intake.

Won't start after short trip like its vaper locked

STARTING / IDLING PROBLEMS / MISSING

Your problem may be one of the following:
First check or just replace the fuel filter. Usually located under the car in front of the rear axle, drivers side.
Next, the fuel pump may be worn out. Usually they just stop working (running).
Next, check the fuel pressure regulator. Usually located on the front fuel rail, drivers side.
Is the vacuum line attached? Not leaking or rotted?
Also, do you smell a strong fuel odor when it won't start? May be one or more stuck-open injectors, or the coil pack is bad.
Checking these in the order listed will more than likely fix your problem.
The clicking noise indicates the battery can no longer run the starter, which also means the fuel pump won't run either.

It could be a fuel issue. How old is the fuel filter? Can you hear the pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key on? Try turning the key to ON without trying to start engine three times waiting for the pump to stop running each time. Then try to start the engine. If it starts, Its a form of Vapor lock caused by the extreme heat we have had lately.

If none of this works, try a new fuel filter first. From there have someone check the fuel pressure regulator and then the pump. If you are in need of a new pump, take my word for it and spend the money to get one from FORD, and not from your favorite parts store. Most parts store parts are made in China and they are JUNK.

Have you hooked a scanner to the computer and checked the oxygen sensor(s)? If they are bad they could lean out the engine.

VAPOR LOCK
Check the following:
Cooling system working properly including fans.
Under hood fuel lines touching coolant or heater hoses.
Fuel lines under vehicle close to or not shielded from exhaust pipe, converter, muffler. Fuel lines pinched or crushed.
Fuel filter changed recently.
Fuel pump pressure.
Cheap(Bad) gas.

Also, a restricted exhaust system can lower engine performance. If you dont know old the plugs and wires are, replace them. With plug wires, its the age not the miles. How old is the coil pack? It could be "breaking down" at higher rpm

The car will turn over but will not start as if no fuel was getting to it, but you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key

Try spraying starting liquid at the throttle body and then start. If it starts and runs smooth then its faulty fuel pump and clogged fuel filter issue.--------

A car that cranks over but doesn't start, in many cases will be due to a bad fuel pump, a broken timing belt, an inoperative cam sensor or crank sensor. Also these problems are related to faulty spark plug. Check the spark at spark plugs when you start the car. Do you notice any spark. Actually you should see. If in case there is no spark then it's a spark plug problem. Also the coil pack gives power to spark plug. So check the voltage at coil pack. It will show 12 volt. If there is no voltage noticed at coil pack then its faulty coil pack that has to be replaced. If all the possible options checked out ok then check the car starter. The starter gets power from battery to start the car. If the starter is faulty then it will not let the car to start. Also check and confirm that there is fuel in the car. If its very low fuel then in some cases this causes the problem. Also check and confirm that fuel pump is functioning properly and the fuel filter is not clogged. One of the easiest ways to check for a fuel pump related problem is to spray a little starting fluid into the air intake while trying to start the car. If the car starts momentarily, then there's a good chance the fuel pump is not working or the car is out of gas. You can also listen for the fuel pump's humming sound when the key is first turned on. Also if a inoperative fuel pump is suspected, a good technician will always check to verify there is power and ground being supplied to the pump, to eliminate the possibility of a bad relay or electrical issue. Fuel pressure can be checked with a pressure gauge and if there is pressure, pulse can be checked at the fuel injectors in several ways including the most common, with the use of noid lights. If the injectors don't have pulse the engine won't start. ---------- This troubleshooting tips will help you to solve the problem. Thanks. Helpmech.

My 1996 ford taurus sho wont start, it will turn over but not start what could be wrong?

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

Looks like that there's no current flowing that's why it won't fire up. I strongly suggest that you check and replace the coil pack if necessary. If the coil pack is faulty there will be no current to the plugs. One good reason why it won't fire up.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Will not start,

Check to see if the coil packs are getting spark, Than the sparkplug wires,,If it is getting spark than do a fuel pressure test to see if your fuel pump is working. A 99 is old enough to have a bad coil or fuel pump, How many miles?? Over a 100k. You might have to get a garage to do the test and check the fuel filter, fairly easy to change on a ford.

I'm helping a friend to get his 02 Ford Explorer going after sitting for about 6 months, put in new battery and checked fluids then tried starting. it would crank over but not fire up,tried numerous times...

You need fuel, air, and spark to start it. Make sure the engine is getting fuel. Make sure the pump is working. Fuel goes from the pump to the filter, through the lines, to the engine. If the engine is getting gas, you need to check for spark. This concerns the spark plugs/coils, wires, distributor, coil pack, dist.cap, rotor, cam sensor, crank sensor, timing belt, ecm. It is a lot of things but anyone of them can make the car not start. That is why it is important to do a fuel check and a spark check. If it gets fuel, that cancels out fuel. Same for the ignition system, where you get the spark. If you have any questions, just let me know.
