Inside the petrol tank usually
Normally fuel filters are not far from the tank, in my experience, look for a metal cylinder attached to a rubber hose coming from the tank and joining another hose going to the front. You could buy the filter for your car then get under it and know what you're looking for.

I used tonown a 97 camaro, repaired many things on it, bought service manuals, spent some money on it... eventually change de cars and I still have this el manuals laying around somewhere. Forums and videos are great sources, specially because there are forums dedicated to car makes.
My point: manuals are not worth it. Cheers!

Most modern day fuel injected cars have the pump located inside the gas tank. It's the safest place to put it, it can't ignite any fumes because it's submerged in the liquid.

Make sure you mark cam and crankshaft pulleys with at least two marks on each one.
Also put marks on engine to keep them all lined up.
I use either tippex correction fluid or white paint.

If the noise is from the top off the engine it is most likely a failed or failing lifter.
