Go to YouTube, type Elantra Timing belt replace. There are a few videos that will show cam and crank timing marks. Very helpful stuff.

SOURCE: need marks for timimg belt

On the crankshaft gear there is a VERY small dimple that aligns with a mark on the motor. The mark on the motor (a small triangle) is at roughly 11 o'clock. After you line these timing marks up look at the camshaft gear and you will see that on one of the spokes there is a hole. You need to use a mirror to line this hole up with the dimple on the cover that is behind the camshaft gear. (It is at roughly 1 o'clock) If this hole is 180 degrees from where it should be you need to rotate the motor 1 more revolution at the crankshaft and it should now be lined up, or close. Once lined up I like to take a silver (metallic) Sharpie and make my own mark on the camshaft gear and on the backing plate that is behind it. You can make this mark where ever it is convenient for you. As long as you know where your marks line up, that is all that matters. This way I don't have to use the mirror as often.

  • Step 5 Once you have your timing marks aligned you need to locate the tensioner. The tensioner obviously keeps the appropriate amount of tension on the timing belt.

I just put a timimg chain an water pump in a 2001 chrysler sebring 2.7 liter engine an it will back firer at start up an not run .no matter how many times i check timing marks everytime it seems to no

I just recently experienced the same problem. The timing is 180 degrees out. Unfortunately the only way to correct it is to take the engine apart again. Set the right hand camshaft to TDC by using the marks on the timing gear for that bank. The left will follow to the degree it can although you will have to manually hold the cam in position when you put the timing gear back on. Now you can remove the timing chain. The crank TDC indicator may not be right on but it will be close. Rotate the crank CW one revolution to the point the TDC marks are lined up. Now install the timing chain according to the instructions. The timing gears on the camshafts will only go on one way as the bolt holes are slightly off the extreme diameter of the gear. If you put the chain back on making sure that all the marks are proper, she'll fire on the second cylinder up. Not a fun job I know, but when everything works right, you do get a sense of satisfaction.

What are the timing marks for 1996 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2 ?

timimg marks for camshafts are notched in the top of the cylinder head. they shuld line up directly in the middle of the 2 smaller cam gears behind the new belt should come with lines on it to make it easier crank to be lined up with keyway slot to the right again the belt should have a ditted line on it for that remember remove the tensioner pushrod assembly and put it in the vice to depress it line the holes up in the body of it and put a 1/4 in allen key through it when you refit remove the key turn it over twice all good

What is the firing order on the 1.6 engine also what marking is there on the motor to do the timing by using a timing light

To the best of my knowledge the 1998 Hyundai Elantra has only a 1.8L (1796cc) engine. Are you sure on the 1.6L?

    For the 1.8L:
    Firing Order:
    1-3-4-2
    Cylinders:
    (back of engine)
    1-----2-----3-----4
    (front of engine)
    Ignition Connections:
    (back)
    o<---1
    o<---4
    o<---3
    o<---2
    (front)

As far as the markings on the outside of the engine, I'm not aware of any. However, by placing markings (white paint) on the Crankshaft Pulley (lip) and using the Timing Strobe you can get a relative idea. However this is not totally accurate, as the Camshaft Position is not visible. With a 4-Cylinder Timing symptoms will be very obvious.
Click on the following Link. It has the Timing Marking Diagrams for the inside of the engine.

Removal: Support engine: remove -engine mounting, auxiliary drive belt, water pump pulley, crankshaft pully bots & crankshaft pully, timing belt covers....turn crankshaft to TDC on No 1 cylinder, ensure crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket & balancer shaft sprocket timing marks lighned. Pls note: Timing marks on camshaft sprockets should align with cylinder head uppter face, dowl pins on camshaft sprockets should face downwards....Slacken tensioner botl. Move tensioner away from belt & tighten bolt.
Remove: automatic tensioner unit bolts, automatic tensioner unit, timing belt, crankshaft bolt, crankshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket guide washer...slacken balancer shaft belt rensioner bolt, move tensioner away from belt & lightly tighten bolt...Remove balancer shaft belt.

    Installation:
ensure timeing marks aligned.Note: Timing marks on camshaft sprockets ahould align with cylinder head upper face, exhaust sprocket mark is on recess but inlet sprocket mark is on tooth. To check oil pump sprocket positionded sorrectly: remove blanking plug from cylinder block, insert 8mm diameter Phillips screwdriver in hole. ensure screwdriver is inserded 60mm from face of cylinder block. If screwdriveer can only be inserted 20mm-turn oil pump sprocket 360". Inset screwdiver again.
Fit balancer shaft delt in anti-clockwise direction starting at crandkshaft sprocket....Slacken balancer shaft belt tensioner notl, turn tensioner clockwise to tension belt. Tighten bolt to 15-22 Nm... Applu thump pressure to belt at tentioner, belt should deflect 5-7mm. If not: Repeat tensioning procedure.... Install - chankshaft sprocket guide washer & crankshaft sprocket.
