Your description is pretty sparse. The first thing I'd look for is the timing. For this you will need a timing light. Check inside your distibutor for signs of arcing. An engine grossly out of time suggests the possibility of a timing chain or the cam sprocket are so badly worn that the engine has "jumped time". I'm sorry but given the minimal info available that's all that comes to mind at the moment.

check wires, cap and rotor for tracking or moisture. Replace as needed

You need to get the codes read to verify, but i think your in need of coil pack or wires.

Sounds like a timing problem, check timing and if off could be timing chain worn out especially if there is excessive miles(200,000 miles or more)

This is caused by the ignition timing being disrupted. There's possibly something going wrong with the distributor, maybe the coil, ignition module, bad spark plug wires, there's a sequence of parts in the system that would cause misfiring if one of them has failed.
My brothers old Chevy 6 cylinder started doing that and it turned out to be that the timing chain tensioner had failed. That made the timing chain sloppy so when he let off the gas, it caused the whole thing to skip a beat, sputter, backfire and then catch back up with itself when he put his foot back on the pedal.
