Sooty plugs and misfiring indicates problem injectors
run a couple of quality injector cleaner through the tank and see if that improves the running

My sincere apologies for the delayed response.
I am personally going back to answer your unanswered questions.
I have only been a free contributor to this site for the past 4-months.

I do not know if you still need this information, but I am going ahead and answering it anyway.

The Dodge 3.9L (238 cubic inch) Engine from 1988 thru 1996 is the same:

Firing Order:

2........1
(front of engine)

Distributor:
(back)
........3.....(+)-screw
..2
..................4
.1
.................5
(+)......6
(front)

Rotation Direction:
CLOCKWIZE

Let me know if this helped you, or if you have any additional information or questions. Feel Free to contact me at FixYa.com!

SOURCE: 1988 Chrysler Newyorker 3.0 fireing order

THIS IS NOT THE FIRING ORDER. Honestly just look at it, 123456? There is no way that is right. The order is right on the distributor cap I bought and works perfectly on my 1988 Chrysler New Yorker. It is 1,3,5,4,6,2 going counterclockwise on the cap.

Firing order

Those numbers on the cap identify which cylinder is connected to which plug wire and in some cases its also the firing order. Usually the firing order is stamped into the top of the intake manifold someplace. You also need to know which direction the rotor is turning in to make sure you get the correct order. Leave the cap off and bump the started to see which direction the rotor turns in and you can work out the firing order from that.

What order do the spark plug wires go on the distributor for a 1992 mazda protege dx

You may need a book with a diagram for this. Most auto parts stores have the books. Online search may be good too.
Firing order is 1342 counterclockwise. You may have to put the timing marks on TDC to know which wire terminal is cylinder one. Cylinder one is the cylinder closest to the drive belts.

The book say that the firing order is 1342 but my car will only run with it from left to right on the cap 4312 , 1& 4 being reversed. why wont it run with volvo spects.

ORDER is the key word here. 1342 is the order counting from the front to rear. Your distributor turns counter clockwise. You say it is 4312 which is also correct. Remember ORDER is the important thing here. Start counting your 4312 with the 1 and go to the left and start over on the right.
You will see 1342, 3421,4213 and 2134 are all the same thing in ORDER.
I hope this makes it clear. Robert

Mazda protege backfires when try to start it

SOUNDS like you have put 1 of the plug wires on the wrong way around OR you have got a valve sticking or burnt out so go back and check the firing order
on a 4 cylinder its 1342 and on a 6 clinder its 153652
RECHECK AND LET ME KNOW HOW YOU GET ON.

1997 Mazda Protege-Engine Light-Cylinder 2

I would change the following in this order if your are tight on money...if not you could have it done all at once.

1. Change Spark plugs (most likely cause of the misfire)
2. Change Spark plug wires
3. Change Rotor Button (this is inside the distributor cap)

All three are fairly easy processes. I would try this first before giving up on the engine. Hope this helps.
