Fuel Pump?

Backfiring is not going to have anything to do with the level of fuel in the tank. You most likely have burned valves or broken valve springs in your engine. I would do a compression test.

Diesel engines are super finicky about clean fuel. Speaking of that I'm going to assume when you said "gas" you meant diesel fuel, gas is really bad for diesel engines. Is it possible someone mis-fueled it. The other thing that will make a diesel not want to start is air in the fuel, or water contamination. It is possible to draw air in with out having fuel leak out. The most common place for this is at the filter. Has there been any recent service work done? Is it possible the the cap on the fuel filter is not all the way tight or the o-ring seal is torn. Since it ran fine before and there was no catastrophic noises I am going to be looking for a fuel delivery or fuel contamination. Another posibility is are you using a biodiesel? This stuff does not like cold weather, in fact if you are somwhere where it gets really cold, regular #2 diesel will gell at sub zero temps. It could be you got some bad fuel.

Sounds like a fuel leak. Check the lines from the tank to the engine. Check the injectors. Check the fuel rails.

What a great truck I've had two, one I drove around in mexico for 6 months. You need to change the fuel filter. It is located under the truck on the fuel line coming from tank about even with the seat. You need a wrench set. Make sure you have the arrow on the new filter going the proper way, toward the motor. Good luck, thats a tough truck

Your feuel problem sounds like a filter.

The most likley cause of this problem is the tank to tank switching valve. To check this, simply turn the key on, do not start the vehicle, And have someone switch the tanks back and forth. You should be able to hear and or feel the valve moving. It is located about half way down the inside of the drivers side frame piece.

Sounds like your ECT (engine coolant temp.) sensor has gone bad. What happens is when the truck is cold, the ECT acts like a choke on a carb. When the truck gets to operating temperature, the ECT tells the computer that it doesn't need the little extra fuel anymore. What's happening with your is the ECT isn't telling the computer that the engine is at operating temp. It's acting like the choke on the carb. is stuck shut. The computer is being told the engine temp is at 40 below still.
