Could be a number of things. It could be the charger/plug itself. Look at the plug end of the charger... unscrew the cap. There's a fuse in there... maybe it's blown. Could be the car fuse. Your owners manual will let you know which fuse controls that system... maybe. If not, just start searching. The panel will be under your drivers side dash. If all that looks fine, maybe it's the car charger itself. There are several different types of chargers so removal and installation varies.

Another possibility... Garmin sucks... not really, but I purchased a Garmin once that never would charge in the car either. I used different chargers, and different cars. It was the Navigation unit itself that was messed up. I sent it back to the company.

Hope this helps.

If lighter works, it usually means your charger plug in is not making contact with the center contact in the socket

Good morning need to now what is fuse num 17 in my truck ford explorer xls. as soon is i try to put a fuse it pops

Hello, This 25 Amp fuse(#17) is for your cigarette lighter socket. If you used the socket for something else, you may have bent the terminals inside it. You will need to replace this socket as it is shorting out.

This should not be too expensive. Sometimes the autoparts stores have a display of HELP products for typical repairs and a socket going bad is common.

More cigarette lighter plugs

Yes. Recommend to have local repair/stereo shop perform installation due to running new wiring and fusing circuits.

Cigarette Lighter, used for charging phones, doesn't work!

check the wiring to it? it should be getting a battery voltage (between 12-14v on a good battery) it will be simple enough, as it will only have two possibly three wires.

hope this helps.

Cigarrette lighter (front) in 2002 ford explorer

Hi Rudy

You will have to inspect the cigarette lighter closely, I suspect your son has bent the 2 terminals that make contact with the lighter, and this will continually giving you a dead short and blow your new fuse.
As for the other problem, your idea of shrink insulation sounds perfect.

Good Luck !
John.
