I think 94 is still OBD1 computer system. Have you ever run codes on it? If so the diagnostics terminal will over ride the computer when running so you can set timing. Just get a .99 cent code key from Autozone or use a paperclip.

I have 99 chev pu 4.3 just put new head gaskets on .now I can not get the timing cam retard off -22.whats wrong.everything was set at top dead center.dist lines up on mark 6 inside it. Help

the book shows chev 4.3 L is a v6 chain driven and the valve timing is correct when the two dots line up with each other
if it is the ignition timing that you are talking about you are probably 180 degrees out in the distributor setting
no 1 piston firing lines the rotor button up at no one HT lead and not no 6
all engines regardless are timed of no piston tdc and chev engines are around the 12 degrees btdc for operation

1994 chev 4.3 vortec 6 cyl truck back fire and not want go and when idle up they back fire

backfiring is ignition when there is a inlet valve open. check for incorrect firing order or HT leads touching each other.. Check for dirt and carbon tracks inside the distributor cap or cracks in the cap.

it might be that when you reassembled it that something is wrong with the lifters.. did you label everyone and put it exactly in the original position? very critical that this be done because of the different wear on the camshaft lobes. all components should be put in exactly in there original positions. this is just a thought.. maybe someone else can come up with an easy fix for you.

How to set ignition timing on 1994 chevy 7.4 liter

First you have to find the connector that is near the distributor that is close to the firewall. (It could be taped to the outside harness.) What this does is that it puts the computer into base timing mode. Unplug this connector. Once that's done, then you set the timing just like any other vehicle, with a timing light. After timing is set, reconnect the connector and the computer takes over.
Question: was there engine work done to it or is this a high miler and you just changed the timing chain and gears?

on the fire wall pass side or under the heater box along the carpet on the pass side there is a single wire connector you disconnect that.. is the spout timing connector .. that wil put the engine at base timing .. use timing light to see timing and turn the distributor after its loostened if nescessary to adjust it then retughten and turn off engine then reconnect the spout connector you disconnected earlier.. restart and it will be all set the code generated during the disconnection of the spout will not keep the engine light on once its been reconnected and engine restarted....
