Engine choking? I have an 84 Firebird that seems to want to choke/stall everytime I try to accelerate from a stop. It an AT; what could cause this?

  • jakebanman20 Jul 27, 2009

I dont believe the check engine light has ever been on; dont know if i even have one haha; I'll get it checked and see what happens, thanks.

No worries; we all make mistakes; I'll let my mechanic (aka: my dad haha) know and see if he can check it out... (the joys of him being a certified mechanic!)

Is the check engine light on? If it is, take it to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve any fault code(s) stored in the car's computer. The codes will help narrow down what the problem may be. It could be a faulty throttle position sensor or another problem. To end the speculation, have the fault codes read. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Sorry about that. Maybe it doesn't. Stalling upon acceleration on older model vehicles is sometimes caused by an air intake problem. Check and make sure that the fresh air intake hose is not clogged or damaged. Sometimes I am a knucklehead. Must have been mistaken about the year of your vehicle. My apologies and I hope that you find a resolution to your problem. Best wishes.

Cold choke baffle has 3/16 opening minute I pump accelerator choke thermostat closes primary baffle shut no air to start I force choke open to start why insufficient air to run at high idle?

Your engine probably has an automatic choke device that adjusts automatically with engine temperature. To set the choke when the engine is cold you have to depress the accelerator to the floor and release it completely. You shouldn't have to depress the accelerator again to start the engine, turn the key the engine should start. As the engine begins to warm up it will also begin to initially run faster then it will start to run rough. At this point you have to press the accelerator and release it again. The auto choke mechanism should allow the choke butterfly to open. There may be a number of stops in the system and the choke butterfly will stop again still not fully open and only become fully open when the engine is at operating temperature. Hope this answers you question, Rgs. Bob

My choke light stays on while i drive my 84 firebird trans am. Why does it do that and how can i make it go away?

the choke light will come on when the choke is on i assume its electric choke if the choke is on vehicle would run poorly flood out and stall if vehicle runs fine then its in the electrics of the choke switch or a bad wire to the choke that says its on even when its not i would start there first.

Hi I (female) own a Tazz (Conquest). When I step hard on the accelorator to stop the choke, it does not react as it should. It's about after the 4th or 5th try that the idling goes down. If I can...

Dear,

Get the car carburetor cleaned and reset as it seems that there is some problem in the settings as it stalls when high acceleration is delivered.

thanx

Problems accelerating

the engine tickover is too slow when the engine is cold its running on cold start, ie:choke,, after it warms up the engine slows down this is what is causing it to stall in gear,, get some one to hold the brakes hard on and with the engine running in gear ajust the tick over till its reving at 750 - 850 rpm the revs will go up a bit when its out of gear,, before you pick a gear to go into push the foot brake down to stop the car lurching,,,

My 1987 firebird keeps flooding out, why?

Several things can cause this but start by verify the choke pull off which is responsible for opening the choke plate after engine has started. It will recieve engine vaccum once started and open to allow air into the carb. This is a vacuum dash pot/pull-off externally mounted to the carb with a linkage arm to the choke plate.Without this opening, the engine will be starved for air and put you into a full rich condition. Another external device wchich can mysteriously cause rich conditions is the canister purge valve. It can introduce raw fuel and vapor on start up when failed. It is a black plastic valve near the carb with small and large vacuum tubes.
