Engine light on, on my 2001 Saab 9-3 se convertible

I have been having a similar issue. My engine light comes on and then goes off randomly from time to time. When it first happened in summer 2007 (we bought it in January 2007), our Saab mechanics told me that if there wasn't smoke or visible exhaust it was still okay to drive it, and when we did bring it in there was nothing at all (but we had to pay $100 for the diagnostic anyhow.) I've heard that there is some issue with the gas cap and the check engine light sensor, that if it's not on tight it will show up as check engine. I get the oil changed every 3000 miles (less, actually) and it just passed emissions last month (we have emissions every 2 years), it was between episodes!

2001 Saab SE red engine light and oil can, possible throttle

first off your mechanic sounds like he's taking you for a ride! If the oil lights coming on you need to check your oil pressure. I wouldnt drive this car anymore till I knew for sure I was getting good oil pressure through out the motor. Find a different mechanic! Mechanics are some of the biggest lying thieves! Right up there with lawyers.

2001 SAAB 9-3 SE won't send signal to start

Is your SAAB automatic? If so, it is most likely the Neutral Safety Switch. I have had the same problem, it is very common in automatic Saab 9-3 models made in 1999-2002.

Engine Malfunction Light

Hi I have a 2001 9-3 SE 2.0T and the same problem.

My garage have checked the car three times now and each time the OBD 2 has reported that the Cat is reporting a substandard output. They have tested the cat each time and it's well within it's limits.

In the end I got sick of paying £49 to clear the MIL check light only to have it appear a few weeks later. So I bought from Ebay an ELM327 for about £50 and now turn off the MIL Check light myself. Also now when it come on I can check the cause and my garage can't pull the wool over my eyes on the cost of possibly non needed repairs.

I hope this has helped.
