I just changed the thermostat on a 2000 Dodge Durango 4.7L SLT I could only get 7 quarts in the radiator and the bottom of the block. It overheats and the lower hose with the thermostat stays ice cold

Go back remove the tstat. install the housing without the tstat in it. run for about 5 min. Then take the housing off again and reinstall the tstat. that should fix your overheating problem.

I have the same exact durango. I changed my radiator die to a leak on the seam. After replacing I had the same issue after tons of research I found that you have to get all of thw air out of the system for proper flow on our Durangos. It has to be burped by reving the motor for about 5 minutes just enough to release the air bubbles but not spill over the coolant. Then after you dont see bubbles someone puts on the radiator cap while you are still reving the motor. Only when the cap is secure let off the gas and continue to put more fluid in THROUGH THE OVERFLOW ONLY. No air will get in. If you open the cap or let off the gas it sucks air back in. It's simular to a vapor lock the air causes pressure and prevents proper circulation. Or when you get a gas bubble in your stomach. Lol
There was a short video that showed the proper way to fill the cooling system back up up in the 02 4.7L durangos

SOURCE: 2002 dodge 1500 Changed radiator, thermostat, and hoses. No heat

Why was radiator replaced?Did it have heat before ? If it was plugged, the heater core may also be plugged. Try flushing it with a water hose in both directions. I dont know why the botton radiator hose would be cold, the radiator should be a uniform temp and the air coming through the radiator should be HOT, when the engine is at operating temp. What condition was the old coolant? if it was rusty, the water pump may have lower flow than normal.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. Have you checked to see if it is a coolant sensor? Have you checked to make sure the fans are coming on? Are you leaking coolant anywhere? Checked the cap?

Where is the thermostat located on a 2000 Dodge Durango

If you look at the picture.
Notice where the radiator cap is, follow that hose to the left and where it meets the engine is where your thermostat will be.
It will be located behind, and about in between the alternator and A/C pump.

No heat in dodge durango 2000

First solution--check to make sure radiator is full of antifreeze. If not, top up to 1 inch below the top--then run engine 10 minutes--should be heating if antifreeze level was down a quart or more. Second solution--drive car 5 minutes--find open highway--dry road--floor the gas--if engine thermostat is sticking --this MAY blow it open. If there is now heat--the problem is a sticking thermostat. Thirdly, if no solution-- there is a possible plugged heater core--take to technician for testing. (This is under dashboard & extreme work needed to remove.)
