No
replace the armature
one dead segment ( normally a dry joint on the commutator bar) will stop the starter operation if that bar stops under a brush

The starter tests ok across the tester but the car won't start. I have to push start it

  • Bill Boyd Jul 08, 2017

the only way to test an armature is to put it in a machine called a "growler"and use a blade ( hacksaw blade is good) to check the frequency as the armature is turned dead bars or windings will not vibrate the blade
we are talking of a starter not turning the engine over here and not turning the motor but not starting ( firing up)
If you push it to start it , well that indicates a bad battery , bad ground or bad cables and terminals

My 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse gs won't crank. Just sputtered and now won't even crank. The battery is good, already had it checked.

If the battery is definitely good, I'd suspect worn contacts at the bottom of the starter solenoid, which won't pass current to the starter, or a dead segment in the starter motor.

If it is a manual you can try a clutch start, and if the starter then operates it is probably a dead segment, which comes to rest under the brushes now and again.

If an auto you will have to get the starter motor checked out. Some people recommend hammering on the housing but I think that is just relief from frustration.

While driving my 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse car quit and no power to any electrical systems now it still has no power and won't turn over

Either battery is dead, or a fuse (70A?) in the main fuse box has blown. This is rare, but can happen. A major fault in the alternator, or the alternator harness can blow this fuse e.g the harness burns on the exhaust pipe and shorts to ground.

You spent too much money or you have a whole lot more to spend. Bench test your starter beside your car to see if it works not connected to your car. If your car is a standard, push the car in neutral and put it in drive. See if the engine turns over. If you have an automatic, hook a socket to the crankshaft and try to move the pulley. Yes I am saying your engine may not be moving. Keep in touch.

Go to your local auto parts superstore and ask them to hook up the OBD scanner to read the fault codes. Or your mechanic. Hope this helps.

2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse starts sometimes then wont and just makes a clicking sound, is my starter going out?

could be, unless your battery is dying. a nearly dead battery will make clicking noises while it is cranking. if you keep forcing it by turning the key from "run" to "crank" and it gets it to start it may be a dead spot on the starter.

Alternator and battery issue

Did you fully charge your battery before you ran the new alternator? If not, the alternator is damaged and will have to be replaced.

If your battery has a dead cell it definitely destroyed your new alternator.

Do you have a voltmeter. Do you know how to measure battery voltage?
