Look at the new switch and if there is threads on it then the old one will turn out and you can thread the new one in the same place. You may loose some tranny fluid when doing this so have the new one ready.

Fix speedometer on 93 mercury villager

remove the 2 pin connector from the vehicle speed sensor on the top rear of th trans. clean terminals, see if fixed. If still bad, nylon gear on speed sensor is bad. 10 mm bolt holds it in but most are corroded in place and impossible to remove. Only twist & pry on metal base.

How do you remove a stuck speed sensor?

very difficult. They corrode in place due to steel contacting aluminum.

Soak base with penetrating oil. Tap steel base on side with chisel to break it loose. Try to get vice grip on base and tap back and forth to twist it back and forth to free up. It takes a lot of effort and time.

1997 Mercury Villager - Odometer is irratic between zero and the speed I am driving at. If I am using cruise control, the cc disengages. Would this problem possibly be the cable, a sensor or an internal...

need more info, but you have a vehicle speed sensor in the transmission that sends an electrical signal to your speedometer.
Your speedo the transforms the signal and sends it to the tachometer and the engine control computer (PCM).
There is no cable for the speedo in this van.
The speed sensor is very hard to remove due to corrosion, but you can clean the two terminals on the sensor to see if that fixes it.
The VSS is on top of the trans, drivers side, rear. Acesss from above or below.
Push release cilp and lift up on the conector. Clean with product from radio shack.
