This is a second hand car which I bought only yesterday. It's done 41000 miles.
I was reving it a bit too much on a hill start and immediatly after this, the speedometer stopped working. I pulled over to let the car cool down as the clutch was smelling a lot, however when I went to drive off the speedometer stil lwasn't working. Everything else seems to be working okay though.
Have the vehicle speed sensor checked, that is tied in with the speedometer.
I have a 2004 ford fiesta 1.4i duractec two door, I have the same problem with the speedo not working and the engine management light came on but I cant find the fault.
It's coincidental that the speedo stopped working here. Chances are that the cable broke and needs replacement. If you can get the instrument panel out of the dash you'll be able to disconnect the cable from the speedo and remove the broken drive spring inside it. If you're lucky it broke at the top. If not you'll have to also remove the cable from the transmission to get the remaining parts out before replacing it.
Cable broke ....replace cable to do this you need to remove the instrument panel ....not a job for most you may want to bring to a mech.
